2 Pyton Pally New May 1 7. 1 989 Ifro cycling making some inroads-on television TT didn't knock ABC's showing of the Jack Nicklaus Memorial tournament or CBS's coverage of the NBA playoffs of the TV ratings box. RITTER COLLETT SPORTS EDITOR she will be riding next week with the U.S. national road racing team in Norway. Bruce Skilllngs, the coordinator of the racing competition, forsees a record field for the major events.

While the name riders draw the most attention, there are dozens of young men and women in this area taking up competitive riding. They must be registered with the USCF, which issues cards at four levels. The class 4 beginners work up the line. The classifications keep beginners from cluttering up the field in the higher level races. The two strongest teams coming in are Team Carey and Team Lycra.

The latter is based in Indianapolis, the racing capitol of the midwest. Lycra has both men and women riders and the program is headed by Roger Young, who coordinates all training at the Indianapolis Velodrome. Roger Young rode in three Olympics, 10 years on the U.S. National team and is the husband of Olympic gold medalist Connie Carpenter Young. Jim Pollak, who rode the winning sprint in the 1985 Little 500 at Indiana University and has been a full-time racer since is one of the Lycra standouts.

Team Carey's big names include Ronnie Hinson, a veteran with an Imposing record; Jeff Rutter, an excellent sprinter; and Eaton, former national road racing champion and winner of the Tour of Great Britain. The success of the Tour de Trump will a long way toward familiarizing the average sports fan with cycling, which is a compli-cated sport because of the emphasis on team tactics. Enthusiastic zillionaire Trump is already i talking about expanding the race In number of days and geography. The initial race cov-ered 853 miles in 10 days and six states. Trump told the New York Times he's had calls from Washington, Philadelphia and Bos- 1 ton wanting to be included and said eventually they may go coast to coast.

No such grandiose dreams prevail here, but the West Carrollton, Wright State and Kettering racing adds an interesting dimension to the Dayton area sports scene. i and race training techniques. Melton served as technical advisor for the last three U.S. Olympic teams. He'll be the "expert" on the telecasts with Mick Hubert.

Pre-registration for the clinic is required through the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce and forms have been mailed to members of the Dayton Cycling Club and cycle shops. You may also call Jamie Reese at the Chamber (226-8256). At 1 p.m. Friday, local cyclists may participate with no charge in a supervised relaxing "Ride with The Stars" from Carillon Park to the race course in West Carrollton. Many of the name pro riders will be with the group.

There wilt be Sunday racing at Wright State near the Executive Center adjacent to I-675. Things wrap up Monday with the Tour of Kettering events including the Janelle Parks senior women's classic, 28 miles and 40 laps plus the third senior men's criterium. Kettering native Parks, an Olympic and Tour de France competitor, will not be here, as But the mere fact NBC presented Its two-hour coverage of the Tour de Trump in direct competition with golf and basketball Sunday, afternoon illustrates that competitive cycling is making potent inroads in this country. Dick Enberg and cohorts naturally concentrated on the world class stars in competition, far the $50,000 first prize, but at one poifjt. I heard the name of Matt Eaton mentioned in passing.

Matt Eaton is coming to Dayton Memorial Day weekend as a member of the strong North Carolina-based Team Carey to ride in the feature race of the biggest weekend of cycling ever held in our midst. That would be the Huffy Pro-Am to be run on the 40-mile, 45-lap Criterium course established on the streets of West Carrollton. The; May 27 two-hour event will be televised locally over WHIO-TV starting at noon. It is one of three criteriums open to pros and top amateurs to be staged at the 1 3th an- nual Dayton River Festival Pro-Am classic. The rapidly growing weekend spectacle has been spaced out over five days, with Innovative events open to non-racing casual cyclists.

A Bicycle Fitness clinic will be offered Thursday evening to start things off in the West Carrollton Junior high school. Mike Melton, the Huffy Tech Center Coordinator is in charge of programs offering lectures in cycle innovations, fitness, nutrition, massage Stillwell homers twice as Royals' win 011 103 100 007 102 110 200 01 a SILouls Houston NATIONAL LEAGUE West Division Angels 7, Red Sox 2 Johnny Ray drove In four runs and Kirk McCaskill scattered 10 hits in eight-plus innings as host California won its fourth straight game.
