MILLER, Imogene, age 63 of Tipp City, pased HARRIS, Mary Lillian, HAMBLETT, Eleanor 01 Obituorics By Jonathan Brine kman STAFF WRITER About 150 gallons of water containing a trace of antifreeze overflowed from a cooling system Saturday morning at the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. plant in Fairborn, company officials said. The spill, which plant manager Steven Curtis said is not dangerous, was cleaned up by plant workers. "There's a big difference between water and reclaimed fuels," said Curtis. The company burns waste chemicals as fuel in its cement-making kiln.

State and local officials said they are not concerned by the spill, which they said was properly handled by the company. "Based on the material spilled and the amount, it doesn't generate concern on our part," said Rich Carter, a compliance unit supervisor for the state Department of Environmental Protection. Carter said the antifreeze, Amertol CN, is comprised mostly of a type of glycol that is "essentially non-toxic" in low concentrations. The spill occurred after 11,000 gallons of antifreeze was removed from a cooling-system tank and put into a holding tank for the summer, said Sam Cox, a relief supervisor at the plant. The empty tank was cleaned out and filled with water, he said.

When the cooling system was started up, the water began foaming and overflowed. Four ounces of an anti-foam chemical was added and the foaming immediately stopped, he said.
