v. 98 DAILY NEWS Thursday, December 21, 1989 Python Falin goes 'round uorEd in (D Pays' By JAY SHARBUTT i Ch. llsmrffsGutrts 'Yule Log' tradition By GEORGE MAKSIAN Daily News Staff Writer rWAH! HUMBUG! For the first I j-Ctime in 24 years, Channel 11 LUwon't be showing the popular "Yule Log" on Christmas Eve. Instead, it will air the following morning from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Channel 11 has scheduled a rerun Christmas Eve (8-10 p.m.) of the "Hollywood Christmas Parade," which first aired on Dec. 2, with Leeza Gibbons and Bob Eu-banks as hosts. 'The Hollywood Christmas Parade' is a strong holiday program," said a station spokesman when asked for an explanation for the switch. "The Yule Log," also called "A Video Christmas Card," was first introduced in 1966 and has been an annual Yuletide treat ever since. "The Yule Log" featured a picture of burning logs in a fireplace, accompanied by a continuous string of Christmas carols and other seasonal music, all presented without commercials.

The first scene of the fireplace was shot at New York's Gracie Mansion and then was reshot in later years on a Hollywood set "The Hollywood Christmas Parade," a popular event in Tinseltown, this featured Sammy Davis Jr. as the grand marshal. ON THE HONG KONG FERRY: Michael Palin as modern-day Phileas Fogg NEAR YULETIDE last year, Michael Palin was returning to his London home and family. He recalls the joyous cries of his children, to wit: "'Got any I said, 'I've been traveling light' He sighs. "The shopping.

That was far, far worse than traveling around the world in 80 days." Which is what the merry-faced member of Monty Python's Flying Circus had been doing for the British Broadcasting Corp. He emulated the famed globe-trot of Jules Verne's fictional Phileas Fogg, traveling only by land and sea. He went by train, cargo ship, ferry, taxi, camel, even a passing sheik's new red Mercedes. No jumbo jets, though. He didn't mind: "I find air travel highly overrated, usually late, and a sheeplike form of transport" Starting Jan.

7, "Around the World in 80 Days," a seven-part documentary series about his expedition, will be shown Sunday nights on cable's Arts Entertainment Network, which bought it from the BBC. Since his Python days, Palin has been in various movies, some, like "Time Bandits" and "A Fish Called Wanda," with Python pals. He also has been writing, including a tome for Harry and the Toothache Pills." He made a well-received BBC series on train travel in 1980. But his round-the-world voyage, filmed with a crew of five, was, as a Python would say, something completely different. What to wear, for example.

"There's no shop like 'Circumnavigators, he notes. "But the idea is to take as little as possible." For him, this meant six shirts, three pairs of trousers, and a small bag containing tapes and a diary book. He set off from London in the fall last year, proceeding eastward via the Orient Express, then on varied forms of transport At one point he suffered from food poisoning, and several times found himself behind schedule. He also faced much suspicion by bor- mas. There was a lot of real mean spirit about the place.

I don't know if I was tired or something. "But people were Christmas shopping and pushing each other, there were ads everywhere and bands playing and electric bells ringing. "It seemed just utter madness after what I'd been through, which was quite a long sea journey, something calm and quite reflective. It was as if my country didn't match up after a world of hospitality." AP der guards in the Mideast One asked him why he was in Dubai if he was going to Tokyo. Palin's response: "Oh, well, that's a long story, don't want to bore you." The gate was raised.

Off went Palin proceeding to Bombay, where he got a shave from a blind barber, thence to Singapore and the Orient That included a hydrofoil trip up China's Pearl River and dinner at a small cafe that served only the meat of poisonous snakes: "They bring the snake to you in a lit IV tle box, set it down on the floor, and execute it then and there." A FAST, modern cargo ship brought him across the Pacific to California. Amtrak carried him save for a hot-air balloon ride in the Rockies to New York. He got home by ship. The worst part of the whole voyage? Palin smiles. "Well, getting back to London was the worst part of the journey, getting back just before Christ STYLE RADIO HIGHLIGHTS MORNING 5:00 WCBS-AM, WINS News and information features (Continuous) Fellowship Hamburg Show AFTERNOON 12:00 -WFAM- Special.
