CALL TODAY! 268-3025 ext. 3002 Joan Continued from Page D1 production omitted substantial portions of Shaw's text most notably, the author's epilogue and the tail end of Scene 6. As a result, the play ends when Joan dies. But in Shaw's hands, Joan's life didn't end at the burning stake; rather, her death had a profound effect on those who witnessed it, and her acts and ideas profoundly altered the course of history weH beyond the span of her own life. Shaw's epilogue is a powerful commentary on Joan's enduring power and on the hypocrisy of those who condemned her, killed her and later rehabilitated her as a hero and finally a saint.

But this is a philosophical quibble. On a dramatic level, the play works well enough without the omitted scenes, and Strollers does a commendable bringing it to life. Which makes a recent low turnout all the more disappointing. Perhaps theatergoers were scared off by fears of pre-Halloween revelry. Hopefully, the spirit of Joan of Arc will put courage into their hearts in the coming weeks, so that they might venture Downtown to take in this well-realized performance.

"Saint Joan" runs at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 4 p.m. Saturdays through Nov. 20 at the Drury Stage in the Bartell Theatre, 1 1 3 E.
