Of course, La Bamba i main failing is that it is so pat and predictable, a somewhat unavoidable situation in a biography in which most of us already know the ending. But unlike most films of this type which start with gusto and seem, like most pop records, to fade out as they go along, La Bamba actually improves as it progresses. By the end of the movie, Phillips, who spends most of the film as a smile with a guitar, is actually becoming human, and Morales' Bob is seeming less of a Cheech and Chong stereotype and more of a complex character. But we have what we have, which is a lot like Valens' career: A few moments of innocent joy, a lot of stuff we've heard before, and a lot more promise.

And lest we forget the reason for all of this, we also have a lot of well-performed music, much of it (including the Valens' performance sequences) provided by none other than Los Lobos, a band that, 30 years later, has managed to fulfill Valens' dream of combining traditional Hispanic music with the rowdy rhythms of rock roll. That hardly makes Valens a visionary, but it does make him more than a sweet-faced kid who died in a plane crash. with his mother (Rosana De Soto) and sisters in a border camp. His family is saved from this dusty, dead-end existence by a kid in a black leather jacket who roars into the camp on a motorcycle and whisks them away: It's Ritchie's half-brother, Bob (Esai Morales), fresh out of the joint and holding enough cash to take the entire family and Rosie (Elizabeth Pena), a girl he's just seduced to a trailer park in east Los Angeles. Ritchie and his half-brother are the usual study in contrasts: The younger boy Is bright and sensitive and determined to make his mark in rock 'n' roll.

Bob is a hell-raiser who spends most of his time drunk and on the fringe of trouble. Yet their love for each other manages to survive, even when Bob abuses Rosie (whom Ritchie was sweet on) after he gets her pregnant. It even survives Ritchie's climb to the top, which begins when an Anglo, a local music biz hustler (Joe Pantoliano) who records local artists in his family room, takes Ritchie under his wing and plots his future. Bob doesn't like it when Ritchie is asked to change his name to Richie Valens or when it appears people are trying to "whiten" his brother's music. But between drinking bouts, he keeps Ritchie in touch with his roots.

Ritchie, however, always keep one foot in white American teen culture. In La Bamba, racism hardly seems to affect the ever-hopeful Ritchie at all while it sends his more cynical brother to the depths of dispair. One has to wonder if director and writer Luis Val-dez really intends to send such a sim Fresh-as-summer specials Friday Saturday Dayton SUMMER FILM FEST HAROLD MAUDE RUTH GORDON BUD CORT THURS. FRI. EDDIE MURPHY BIEVIEra-YHIIJ-Sf iu.ou::DSEl 1 1 PMl AnOXOtl Release (itt'0iCw CUUUJCf TODAY By Terry Lawson FILM CRITIC On the surface, La Bamba would seem to be a rather blatant if belated attempt to capitalize on the success of The Buddy Holly Story, a first-rate melodrama that not only tapped into the baby boom nostalgia for the early days of rock 'n' roll, but which came complete with tragic ending: the star's untimely death in a plane crash in 1958. La Bamba's subject, Chicano rocker Ritchie Valens, was sharing that fateful plane ride with Holly, but his brief life does not immediately appear to hold the dramatic possibilities of Holly's: Even his fans would admit that his talent had barely begun to develop when he was killed at the age of 17. And while Holly's short career yielded dozens of compositions and an image that has become one of rock 'n' roll's most copied, Valens had only three chart hits; only one of which he wrote himself. But La Bamba isn't as much about the.

meteoric rise and literal fall of a star as it is about the constellation from which he came: It's as much about Mexican-American culture as it is about rock 'n' roll. While it's too cli-ched and predictable to be a successful treatment of either, it can be counted as a noble attempt to document both a lifestyle and a life about which little Is known to outsiders. La Bamba begins with a gruesome plane crash, which turns out to be the recurring nightmare of one Ritchie Va-lenzuela (Lou Diamond Phillips), a teen-age migrant worker who lives AFTER INVENTORY DEMO CLEARANCE OFF CASIO YAMAHA Roland nrntnerc 276.2nd BERNIE'S 222-6321 111 "flSii: 1 GATES OPN 8 30 NtW MOVIES ADMIT EVERY WEO MUULI I.O.
