That's the burning question posed by the latest installment in frightdom's longest-running scare series, "Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Man-hattan." Certainly it's the most intriguing query Paramount's hitherto ultraformulaic fear series has ever raised. Unfortunately, it takes more than an hour of screentime for our goalie-masked menace (stunt ace Kane Hod-der) to arrive in the Apple. In fact, most of the action unfolds aboard the cleverly monikered Lazarus, a Fun City-bound cruise ship crammed with upstate Crystal Lake high-school grads, along with our not-so-secret stowaway. Over the next several reels, Jason employing axes, harpoons and, in his most inspired move, a feedback-shrieking electric guitar(!) eliminates most of the ship's passenger list A handful of them strict teacher (Peter Mark Richman), teen hero '(Scott ly, fell in love and married my stepdaughter. Such is the enjoyment we experienced in two Mostly Mozart concerts at Fisher Hall Tuesday and Thursday. And grateful are we especially to internationally ranked soloists violinist Vladimir Spivakov and pianist Maria un iiiursuay, tne iwu jumcu uuicis in (rehearsed) Mozart chamber music. Together they played the Violin Sonata in with extraordinary sensitivity to the music and to each other.

Did someone record this? Pires gave us the Sonata K332 with great freedom and a particularly bright singing tone. Without trying to, Spivakov's tone and technique swamped young violist Paul Neubauer in the major duo, causing problems that mitigated against a true partnership. The grand finale was somewhat less than grand. It was the Flute Quartet K. 285, where Spivakov, Neubauer and cellist Yuli Turovsky beautifully went about serious Mozartian music making, but flutist Paula Robison, with her unnecessary soubrette spastic choreography, even seated, was distracting and affected her playing.

But bravi to Pires, Spivakov, Zin-man and, especially, to Mozart wvau ii cot vnut ct iidf- REVIEW py nod to conductor David Zinman, who not only accompanied the two concertos (Piano, No. 17 and Violin, No. 2) with seamless cooperation, but bracketed them with loving readings of Haydn Symphonies Nos. 87 and 88. Spivakov's elegance was just this side of Romantic dignity while Pires, who sees drama in every note, articulated remarkably: The Andante was 'WONDERFULLY FUI1IIY, FRESH AND DELIGHTFUL.
