2C LOCAL Wisconsin State Journal, Tuesday, February 23, 1993 BO Investigators so far have no leads in the search for Jo Ann Meligan, 33, who was to have appeared in court Thursday on the felony charges. Meligan, the mother of children ages 2 and 4, had been interviewed by police regarding checks that were written during the time she worked for Merrick Foods in Mid-dleton, from June 1, 1988, to Aug. 21, 1992. Her husband, James, said Friday he had no knowledge of the charges against his wife and did not know that she was to have been in court Thursday. He reported her missing Feb.

IS after she failed to return home from work in Monroe. The green 1984 Oldsmobile she drove to work is also missing. president of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association, and joined a Madison law firm after retiring from that post. In 1981, he was appointed Iron County Circuit Judge by Gov. Lee Dreyfus.

He retired in 1986, but remained a reserve judge until 1990. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hurley. Norman W.

Ehle: Ehle, 78, of 1814 Waunona Way, a longtime Madison police officer credited with technological and recruitment advances in the department, died Monday in a Madison hospital. Ehle retired in 1970 as an inspector, one step below the chief in rank. A Stoughon native, Ehle worked as an Oscar Mayer meat- cutter and a Bowman Dairy route-man before joining the Madison -Police Department in 1943. He covered just about every beat in the department except -motorcycle cop, starting as a rookie walking the Tenney Building corner beat on the Capitol Square. After making inspector in 1962, he set up the first use of -video-camera records on sus- pected drunk drivers and headed the first use of microfilm and computers in keeping police -records.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 5700 Pheasant Hill Road, Monona. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Gunderson Fu- neral Home, 5203 Monona Drive.

From staff, AP reports Chen grant: Steve Chen asked Gov. Tommy Thompson Monday to consider calling the Legislature into special session to approve a $5 million grant by Friday for his new supercomputer company. Chen told the governor he can get $5 million in capital from another source if the Legislature matches it, said William McCosh-en, Thompson's chief of staff. "It's a long shot," said McCosh-en, referring to the possibility of winning approval of such a grant that fast. McCoshen said the governor 911 official reassures public A Dane County 911 official reassured the public that they were safe Sunday when part of the computer system went down during the snowstorm.

Chief Supervisor Duke Elling-son said the center had a problem with the computer's hardware and had to resort to dispatching units with an index card system. "That's the way we dispatched before the computer," he said. Instead of call takers being able to send requests for service to dispatchers, it must be done manually when the computer is not working. The computer hardware problem did not affect the center's phone line computer, which automatically displays incoming numbers and the address of the call's origin. That computer is run by the telephone company, Ellingson said.

Missing woman: A Monroe woman missing since she failed to return home from her job Feb. 15 had been due to appear in court last week on forgery and theft charges, authorities said Monday. Ahrensmeyer, Lyle G. BARABOO Lyle G. Ahrensmeyer, age 87, of Baraboo, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 1993, at the Sauk County Health Care Center In Reedsburg.

He Is survived by a son, Robert (Carol) Ahrensmeyer of Baraboo; three grandchildren, Linda (Larry) Wlese of Rock Springs, Larry Ahrensmeyer of Baraboo, and Jim Ahrensmeyer of Baraboo; a sister, Dorothy Eschenbach of Baraboo; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. MADISON Robert S. Brigham, age 84, of 621 Crandall Street died on Monday, February 22, 1993, at his daughter's home. He was born January 7, 1909, in Watertown, Wisconsin. Mr. Brigham was employed as a personnel officer for the University of Wisconsin-Madison where he worked for over 50 years.

He was active In the University Credit Union and Service Club, and he was an avid sports fan. Survivors Include two daughters, Mrs. Carol (Edward) Kahne of Kenosha, and Mrs. Lois (Joel) Maturl of Madison; one sister, Marguerite Baker of Madison; and five grandchildren, Kim and Krlssy Kahne, and Mark, Katie, and Anne Maturl, He was preceded In death by his wife, the former Lucille Albers in 1952; his brothers, George, Albert, and Henry; and a sister Florence Newton. Funeral services will be held at the JOYCE FUNERAL HOME at 5701 Odana Road at 11:00 a.m.

Peter was employed by the Mobil Oil Company for 33 years and has been a resident of Sun Prairie for the past 20 years. The former Patricia Dade was born In Delavan, Wisconsin, on February 1, 1929. She was the daughter of Charles and Ethelyn (Jones) Dade. She was married to Wallace Edmundson on August 14, 1948, In Janesvllle, Wisconsin. They lived In Janesvllle, LaCrosse, Monona, Madison, and since 1974 In Mt. Horeb.

Mrs. Edmundson was a very artistic person, and was known for her rose-moling talent. She is survived by her husband; a son, Stephen (Karen) of Madison; a daughter, Carol (Francis) Bolllg of Verona; three grandchildren, Scott Edmundson, Karl Edmundson (fiance Mike Kohler), and Tyler Bolllg; a agreed only to advise legislative leaders about Chen's request and had not endorsed the idea. John P. Varda: Varda, 75, a retired Iron County judge, died Saturday in Hurley.

Varda received his law degree from UW-Madison in 1940. The same year, he was elected to the state Assembly as a Progressive, but enlisted in the military during World War II. He was the son of Earnest and Mary Malsch. He was born October 7, 1913, In Richmond, Illinois. He moved to Madison and lived there until moving to Rhinelander In 1960. He was employed In foundry work and steel fabricating. He served in the U.S.

Army during World War II In the Pacific Theater. He is survived bv two sisters, Grace Papworth of Woodstock, Illinois, and Gertrude Ledford of Adalrsvllle, Georgia; as well as a brother, William of Madison. The CARLSON FUNERAL HOME of Rhinelander is serving the family. Olson, Marguerite H. SUN PRAIRIEDEFOREST Morgue-rite H. Olson, age 91, died on Monday, February 22, 1993, at the Willows Nursing Home In Sun Prairie. The former Marguerite H.

Hall was born on January 6, 1902 In Minnesota. She was a L.P.N. Nurse for most of her life. She was a member of the Lady's Auxiliary, American Legion 333, in Sun Prairie, a member of the V.F.W. Lady's Auxiliary 8483 In Madison and also, a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church In Sun Prairie.

She was Instrumental In getting L.P.N. Nursing program accredited through the State of Wisconsin. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra (John) Vlrnlg of Madison; a son, John F. (Patricia) Culbertson of DeForest; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and loving friend and caretaker, Margaret Hoffman of Sun Prairie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer Olson; a daughter Mabel; and two grandsons, Butchie, and Scott.

until the time of services at the funeral home. Interment will be held at the Norway Grove Lutheran Cemetery. Paskey, Cecelia M. DEFOREST Cecelia M. Paskey, age 93, of DeForest, died on Sunday, February 21, 1993, at Meriter Park Hospital in Madison.

Cecilia Maria Paskey was born In St. Gallen, Switzerland, on March 7, 1899, and came to the United States at the age of 12. She married William Rlesebelter, who preceded her In death. On May 25, 1932, she was united In marriage with George O. Paskey, who also preceded her In death In 1981.

Mrs. Paskey, along with her husband, homesteaded the farm In Windsor Township, on which she still lived. Through the years she and her husband operated a dairy with home delivery, and for 20 years operated a home made Ice cream parlor at the farm. MADISON Norman W. Ehle, age 78, of Madison, died on Monday, February 22, 1993 after a long fight with emphysema. He was born on December 1, 1914 In Stoughton. He graduated from Stoughton High School at the age of 16. In 1938, he moved to Madison with his parents, to help his father operate Ehle's Grocery Store, located at 44 Fair Oaks Ave.

He also worked as a meat cutter at Oscar-Mayer Co. and also as a route man with Bowman Dairy. He married the former Mildred Hanold on April 6, 1940 in Stoughton. His Interest In police work originated after working one year as a police guard at Badger Ordinance Works. In August of 1943, he iolned the Madison Police Force and started walking a beat on the Tenney Building side of the Capitol Square.

Later he became a squad car patrolman, then a court officer In charge of records. He worked his way up as Sergeant of the Patrol Bureau where his happiest memories were working In the juvenile division. From there he continued his career as Lieutenant, Detective, Captain and finally Inspector, where he was one of three Inspectors directly under Police Chief Wilbur Emery. He retired after 27 years, at the age of 55 In March of 1970. He was a member of St.

Stephen's Lutheran Church. Norman spent his liesure time building and remodeling homes, especially on Madison's lakes. Also, he devoted his spare time, enjoying his family, traveling and boating. Survivors include his wife, Mildred; two sons, John (Norma) Ehle of Monona and Kenneth Ehle of Madison; two grandchildren, Christopher and Sarah; two sisters, Mildred (Vern) Keller of Madison and Hazel (Orlando) Olson of Stoughton; several nieces and nephews, and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, June and La-Verne Lawton of Viroqua, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be held at ST.

Erickson, Margaret L. COLUMBUS Margaret Erickson, age 68, of 518 Manning Columbus, died on Monday, February 22, 1993, at Columbus Care Center, Columbus. She was born on June 24, 1924, In Taycheedah, Wisconsin, to Melvln and Elsa (Derke) Olson. She married Edward Erickson II on October 27, 1945, In Madison, Wisconsin. Mrs.

Erickson was a longtime resident of Madison, living the past 20 years In the Columbus area. She was a member of Spring Prairie Lutheran Church, Keyeser. Mrs. Erickson and her husband owned and operated the "Jolly Tavern," Madison. She was a former member of the Wisconsin Tavern League.

Survivors Include her husband, Edward Erickson II of Columbus; three sons, Edward Erickson III of Madison, Ronald (Pamela) Erickson of Columbus, Gary Erickson of Columbus; daughter, Genlene (Jeff) Lange of Rio, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and other relatives and friends. and again on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until time of services. Pirkl, Marvin A. MADISON Marvin A. Plrkl, age 64, of Madison, passed away on Sunday, February 21, 1993, at his home.

He was born on November 16, 1928, In Blooming Grove, to Anton and Alice (Fisher) Plrkl. He worked for the City of Madison for the street department and retired after 43 years of service. He married the former Helen Schafer on December 1, 1951, at Hope Lutheran Church. Marvin was a member of the Yahara Fishermen's Club. He Is survived by his wife, Helen; two daughters, Sharon (Robert) Anderson of Westport, and Sandra Martin of Madison; two grandchildren, Robert (Jenny) Anderson, and Brenda Martin; two great-grandchildren, Jason and Karrle Anderson; his mother, Alice Pirkl of Madison; a sister, Irene (Wllbert) Ellestad of Madison; two brothers, Donald (Susan) Plrkl of Oregon; many nieces and nephews.

Dorene Ruth Rice, 66, of Madison, passed away Sunday, February 21, 1993 at a Middleton care facility. She entered the nursing home on February 3, 1993. She was born March 14, 1926 In Washington Township, Green County, Wisconsin the daughter of Robert J. and Alma B. Hartwlg Zimmerman.

She was a graduate of Monticello High School, class of 1944, and a graduate of Plattevllle State Teachers College, class of 1947. She was married on June 6, 1947 at Monticello to Richard L. Rice. Mrs. Rice taught at the Edgerton Elementary School for 4 years, worked at Parker Pen, Janesvllle, Wisconsin for 4 years, then taught at the Monroe Elementary School, Janesvllle, Wisconsin until retirement in 1990.

She was a long time Janesvllle resident until moving to Madison In 1989. She was a member of the First Congregational Church and a member of the Fellowship Board. She was a Volunteer at the University Hospital. She loved to Mary KRAFT-LEE Tom LEE, Sun Prairie, son. Feb.

Fredenberg, Leona B. SUN PRAIRIE Leona B. Fredenberg, age 87, died on Sunday, February 21, 1993, at a Madison Hospital. She was born on May 29, 1905, In Cottage Grove, the daughter of Rudolph and Anna Conners Doleshaw. She married John Fredenberg in Rockford, Illinois.

Leona was a member of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary Catholic Church. She Is survived by four sons, Glenn (Florence), Henry (Pat), William and John, all of Sun Prairie; five daughters, Margie (Leonard) Drogsvold of Tomahawk, Ruth (Lester) Rahn of Sun Prairie, Dorothy (Bernard) Wagner of Sun Prairie, Lois (Herb) Benish of Sun Prairie, and Eleanor Kowaskl of Marshall; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband; two sisters, Edna and Mary; a brother, William; and two grandchildren. Holmes, Sharon KIHEI ISLAND, MAUI, HAWAII Sharon Holmes died on Sunday, February 14, 1993, In Klhel Island of Maui, Hawaii, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born June 27, 1939, the daughter of the late Doris Gaarder and Sever Gaarder. Sharon graduated from Albany High School In 1957, and Harper Method School of Cosmetology In 1960.

The Holmes were active In the Arabian Horse Association when they lived in Colorado, and more recently have been supporters of Earthtrust (an organization dedicated to the preservation of the whales and dolphins). Survivors Include her husband, James; four daughters; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Wanda (Robert) Feller of Monti-cello, and Jacquelyn (Richard) Howard of Evansvllle; a brother, Kurtls Gaarder of Palatine, Illinois; and a niece and nephews. Sharon was preceded In death by her mother In 1991; and her father In 1984. A Hawaiian Memorial Service was conducted in Klhel, Maul on February 18, 1993, by the Klhel Canoe Club. Johnson, age 73, of 427 Eldorado Street, Lakeland, Florida, died on Saturday, February 20, 1993, in Lakeland, Florida. He was born on April 17, 1919, and was a lifelong resident of Fltchburg until retiring to Florida In 1985. He had been married to the former Florence A. Moore for 53 years. He retired from the State of Wisconsin, Right of Way Department, as a Right of Way agent In 1982.

He developed the family farm, located at Syene Road and Lacy Road, Fltchburg, Into a home development, now known Tarpleywlck Hills. He was a graduate of the class of 1937 from Wisconsin High and a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 151, Oregon, Wisconsin, Zor Shrine, Arab Patrol, Madison, anmd the Ancient Earthworks Society. He Is survived by his wife, Florence; three sons, Rodney of Flfield, Wisconsin, Jerry of Lakeland, Florida, and Bob of Fltchburg; 18 grandchildren; mother-in-law, Ella Moore; and many other dear family and friends. He was preceded in death by a beloved son, James; and his parents, Seymour and Matilda.

Victor will be missed by his family and friends for his soft spoken ways, his work ethic, and his gentle acceptance of God's will. Varda, John P. MADISON Retired Iron Counfy Judge John P. Varda, age 75, passed away In his sleep early Saturday morning. February 20, 1993.

Judge Varda Is survived by his wife and partner of 51 years, Margaret P. Varda. John Varda attended St. Mary's Grade School, Hurley High School, Goeglblc Community College, and the University of Wisconsin. He received his law degree In 1940, from the University of Wisconsin Law School, and set up a law practice' In Eagle River with his wife, Margaret, also a UW Law graduate.

In 1940, he was also elected to the Wisconsin Assembly for Iron and Vilas Counties, serving as a Progressive and the youngest member of the Legislature at the time. After Pearl Harbor, he resigned from the Legislature to enlist. He subsequently served In the occupation government as Deputy Governor of Aschaufenberg, Germany and, later, as a military ludge Frankfurt. He entered a private International trading business In Germany and New York, before returning to Wisconsin In 1950. From 1950 until 1976, Mr.

Varda was the lobbyist, general manager, and president of the Wisconsin Motor Carriers Association. Upon retirement from the Association, Mr. Varda iolned three of his four sons In practice at the Madison law firm of DeWItt, Porter. In 1981, he was appointed Iron County Clrcujt Judge by Governor Dreyfus. Judge Varda retired from active service In 1986, and remained a reserve ludde until 1990.

He Is survived by ten grandchildren and four sons, Attorney John Duncan (Mary) Varda of Madison, Attorney Michael (Ann) Varda of Madison, Attorney Anthony (Jane) Varda of Madison, and Architect Richard (Dawn) Varda of Minneapolis. A memorial service will be held at ST. MARY'S CATHOLIC CHURCH In Hurley, at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 27, 1993, followed by an open reception at Connie's Supper Club in Hurley.
