Wineke Wisconsin State Journal Can you stand yet one more contention in the Christopher Columbus debate? This one comes from the attorney general of the United States, William Barr, who suggests that rather than criticizing Columbus, we ought to thank God that the Italian explorer brought his European values to the new land. Because Barr, until January, is responsible for much of the nation's 14- ,1. legal process, his views on what values underwrite legal morality have some importance.

His central point is that individual immorality as opposed to unjust social conditions, for example is the principal cause of the nation's problems. Speaking to a conference sponsored by the Catholic League for Religious' and Civil Rights, Barr said Columbus ushered in a values system that protected the country until about 30 years ago, when secularists started ruining America. "As you know, there are some people who see the year 1492 as a watershed of evil, the onset of an age of brutal imperialism," Barr said. "The critics of Columbus focus on the cruelty that the Europeans are said to have brought to the Americas." Not so, Barr asserted. "The truth, of course, is that, in 1492, cruelty, slavery and injustice were not new to these shores.

They have been part and parcel of human history in all times and in all places. "But the Europeans did bring something that was new. They brought a set of beliefs the Judeo-Christian tradition a moral culture, which provided a critique of injustice and a compelling account of man's true dignity." That Judeo-Christian tradition is what makes America great, Barr said. "Over the centuries, this Judeo-Christian tradition has been the single greatest contributor to the material and moral progress of the human race," Barr said. "And it is this moral tradition with its notions of human dignity and rights that has produced and still under-girds our own system of self-gov- ing.

"It is undeniable that since the mid-60s, there has been a steady assault on traditional values. We have lived through 25 years of permissiveness, sexual revolution and the drug culture. moral tradition has given way to moral relativism." Barr blamed secularism for virtually every contemporary societal problem. "The effort to destroy the traditional moral order has brought on immense suffering, wreckage and misery," he said. Even worse, Barr said, the change may be almost irreversible because the media and popular culture support secularism.

"Today, I fear that the power and pervasiveness of our high-tech popular culture not only fuels the collapse of morality but also drowns out the scattered voices raised against secularization." eminent. "The heat of the crisis is a conflict, a struggle, between two fundamentally different systems of values," he said. "On the one hand, we are seeing a growing ascendancy of secularism and the doctrine of moral relativism. On the other hand, we are seeing the steady erosion of our traditonal Judeo-Christian moral system."
