BUT THE GRIZZLY came back Sunday and attacked three New York City teenagers and that meant the end of the bear. None of the youths was injured seriously and they were able to continue their coast-to-coast summer trip. Josh Le Vinson, a M-year-old high school student, was the most seriously injured. He was bitten above the left elbow when he threw his hand over his head to protect himself. "WE HAD HEARD there were bears wandering around," I James rt iivinsim aiQ luesaay san "but we never thought one would attack us.

Two girls, Hilary Wiederhorn and Michele Plunkett, both 15, of New York, also were bitten, but suffered only minor bruises. Levinson and Miss Wieder horn were in their sleeping bags in one tent when the youth said he heard the bear rip one of the tent's walls. "I heard the bear come into the tent," Levinson said. "We ran over to another camper in his trailer and he drove us to the doctor in West Yellowstone," the boy said. The youth said the bear apparently attacked Miss Plunkett, who was in another tent, before biting him. "WE KNEW THERE was a bear warning out, but it really didn't mean anything to us," the boy said. "We still took precautions, like putting our food up in a tree." Paul Hoskins, district forest service supervisor in West Yellowstone, said the bear was an "outcast" with a history of attacking humans. Hoskins said the bear, which was killed after the incident, had also attacked another man last week but rangers didn't want to shoot it then.

THE BEAR'S BODY, de scribed as "underweight and gaunt," was taken to a laboratory at Bozeman, for tests. Montana game and fish officials said they didn't know what caused the attacks. Hoskins said the bear was not destroyed after biting the first man last week because "no one likes to go out and just shoot wildlife. "On the other hand, when you have repeated bitings and mo lesting of people sooner or later it winds up with campers killed and we didn't want that He said the bear was taken to a remote spot after the first at tack, but returned. THE ATTACK was similar to one by two grizzlies in Glacier National Park in northern Mon tana last August.

Two 19-year- old girls, Julie Helgeson of Al bert Lea, and Michelle Kons of San Diego, were killed by the bears while they were sleeping. Levinson was a member of a tour sponsored by the American Youth Hostel Tours of New York. They flew to San Francis co after the attack and are continuing their trip to Los Angeles. storage tank leaked nearly 25,000 gallons of gasoline Tuesday, forming a volatile, two-mile-long slick on the surface of the Mott Basin in Jamaica Bay. Fire department foam trucks blocked the leak about eight hours after it was discovered and Shell reported, "Everything is under control." Earlier, the Coast Guard described the slick as very dangerous and a spokesman said, "A single spark could set the thing off." However, fireboats broke up the slick with detergent emulsion and in late afternoon the Coast Guard said the danger peared past. Press Updates Image of Historical Cave STANTON, Mo.
