Wisconsin State Journal, Sunday, August 4, 1991 9D Twins shackle Muskies MIDWEST LEAGUE inning to pick up his first save. Muskies starter Curt Shaw worked four hitless innings, but gave way to right-hander Jim Dillon in the fifth. Shaw walked six and struck out three. Russo, who leads the Midwest League in home runs and runs batted in, tatooed a Dillon offering over the center-field fence leading off the fifth inning. It was the only hit the Muskies allowed and was more damaging than any of the eight walks the staff issued.

And you had to figure that it certainly wouldn't come from the Madison Muskies' Midwest League-leading offense. That is, however, just the place where all the fowl-, er, foul-ups happened. Tim Persing and Bob Robinson combined to limit the Muskies to a season-low one hit and Paul Russo hit his 18th home run to lift the Kenosha Twins to a 1-0 Midwest League victory. That result, combined with the Rockford Expos' 5-3 loss to the Quad City Angels, kept the Muskies' lead in the second half of the Northern Division at one game.

While The Famous Chicken kept an audience of 2,791 very entertained on an overcast evening, the Twins and Muskies hooked up in a fabulous pitchers' duel that wound up with matching one-hitters. Persing (8-8) worked eight innings, walking six and striking out four. "He's got his hands full," Kuehl said of the former University of Minnesota all-America shortstop who is hitting .256 (31-for-120) with one home run and 10 runs batted in while splitting time at both middle infield positions.

"I think that's the right spot for him." Kuehl also said there was no need for for Gates to join the Muskies because of the solid play by Muskies infielders. Deja vu: Don't blame Gulf Coast Orioles pitcher Ihosvany Marquez if he plunks the Gulf Coast Blue Jays' Diego Salvadore the next time the two meet. Marquez, you see, had a no-hitter going against the Blue Jays recently with two out in the ninth inning. Salvadore promptly broke it up. In bis next start, coincidentally against the Blue Jays, Marquez was again flirting with a no-hitter with two out in the ninth when, you guessed it, Salvadore stepped up.

Guess what happened? LSI It's nice, but Dean Free-land, the Delafield native who was released by the Philadelphia Phillies, was recently signed by the Milwaukee Brewers and assigned to Class AA El Paso. He joined the Diablos just in time to pitch against the Shreveport Captains at Shreve-port's Fairgrounds Stadium, becoming the only player to pitch there since the Captains moved to Shreveport, in 1986. Six years in Class AA? MINOR-LEAGUE NOTES "With these guys, they make you feel like you have a right to know where you stand." Hooper currently stands as one of three setup men for South Bend closer Rolando Caridad. "It was kind of tough adjusting to a new team," said Hooper, who is 0-1 with a 2.70 earned run average, six walks and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings with the White Sox. "I think (the trade) is for the better.

It's nice to know that somebody wants you. "You never know in this profession. People are scouting you every day." Overall this season, the 6-foot-l, 205-pound right-hander is 2-4 with one save, a 2.41 ERA, 18 walks and 34 strikeouts in 41 innings. Of his 21 appearances, 20 have been in relief. "I started last year," Hooper said of his stint with the rookie Helena Brewers.

"Any way to go, I'll do my best with whatever and wherever they stick me. "(But) with relieving, there's not the hype like before the game when you start. You can be in the bullpen talking about girlfriends or the offseason and you're up and getting ready to go in." No Gates: In a switch from previous indications, Oakland Athletics first-round draft pick Brent Gates will not be coming to play for the Class A Madison Muskies this season. Oakland Director of Player By Steve Drumwright Sports reporter A little more than a month ago, Mike Hooper was chatting with roommate and Beloit Brewers teammate Geoff Kellogg about being traded. It was Kellogg, author of a Midwest League no-hitter earlier in the season, who was thinking a change of scenery might be interesting.

Hooper, the twosome figured, would be happy remaining in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. That figures, since Hooper's hometown of Lake Mills is just about an hour's drive away from County Stadium. A week or so later, the self-proclaimed Wisconsin "home boy" arrived at Beloit's Pohlmann Field to find Manager Rob Derksen with a big smile on his face. "He told me I'd been traded," said Hooper, 20, who signed with the Brewers as a free agent June 28, 1989, right out of Lake Mills High School. "I thought he was kidding me.

I thought this was a big setup, but it wasn't." Hooper was traded to the Chicago White Sox organization for power-hitting third baseman Ed Smith. Hooper jumped from Beloit to fellow Class A Midwest League member South Bend. "This is a first-rate organization," Hooper said of the White Sox. "They treat you better. They let you know what's going on with you.
