Television DAYTON DAILY NEWS Friday, March 19, 1982 Page 40 Barry back as WAVI uncovers music long buried some telephone bits." Clay also plans to continue hosting "On Line," the call-in program on Channel 16. 1UU1 Hopkins one of the top 20 deejays In the nation by Col tier's magazine. After an 18-year association with WING, he left to join WDAO for a year, then went into private business and got involved in a recording studio called Cyberteknlcs. He returned to WING from 1973 to 1975 but resigned when he realized he couldn't be a. jock and run a recording studio too.

WHALEN SAID WAVI will stay on the air Saturdays and Sundays until 8 p.m. beginning in May. WAVI is a daytime-only station and signoff times vary during the year. If plans materialize, Campbell would front his "Dee for Dixieland" show from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday and Taylor would finish from 6 to 8.

Campbell previously worked for WHIO, WING and WAVI and now works for Equitable Life Assurance Society here. Meanwhile, ex-WAVI talkmaster Brad Clay has landed on his feet with an on-air job at WPFB-AM in Middletown. He'll be doing the 12:30 to 3 p.m. shift weekdays starting Monday, and he'll double as an advertising salesman for Middletown's oldie goldie station. "I feel elated," says Clay, who left WAVI abruptly last November after Crowl had slapped him with a $5 fine for not playing music in by golly, the folks at WAVI must be serious about all this nostalgia stuff.

Now they're bringing back Gene "By Golly" Barry. A veritable legend In Dayton radio, Barry has agreed to return to the airwaves and join WAVI's movement back to the good old days. He has inked a WAVI contract and will front a Saturday show that will be part of a new 'IBeautlful Weekend" format on the talk-and-memory-music station beginning May 1. WAVI General Manager Joe Whalen said Barry's program will begin at noon on Saturdays and will run until at least 5 p.m. Tentative plans are to follow Barry's show with a couple of other programs hosted by Dewitt (Pee) Campbell, who would reprise his "Dee for Dixieland" show, and big-band buff Randy Taylor.

WAVI boss Bud Crowl Is so pleased with the success of the Sunday show fronted by Bernie Wullkotte (B.W.), who came back on Valentine's Day, that B.W. has been placed In charge of WAVI's weekend programming. "We are keying on Barry," B.W. said. "He's going to be the old Gene 'By Golly' Barry with a touch of nostalgia.

I want him to be the Dick Clark of Dayton. Clark is ageless." Channel hopping Channel 22 won't be carrying either "The Doctors" or "Search for Tomorrow" when NBC juggles its daytime lineup March 29. With "Search" jumping from CBS to a 12:30 p.m. slot on NBC and "The Doctors" moving to noon, both soaps would conflict with "The Bob Braun Show" on TV 22. TV 26 begins a spring Praise-a-ihon Saturday evening aimed at raising operating funds for the family and Christian station In Springfield.

New family members who join during the week-long campaign will receive a gold-plated TV 26 lapel pin and a copy of Dr. Tim LaHaye's book, Buttle for the Family. Steve Kirk will reprise some of his funniest put-ons during next week on his WING morning show. Among Kirk's bits are a phone call to the mother of a teenage musician, requesting that the band play at his wedding reception at a nudist colony. BARRY, WHO ADMITS to being 58, chuckled.

"I'm very happy about it," he said. "I'll be playing a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Obviously I'll be playing a lot of things that people associate with me. I'll definitely be spinning a lot of the oldies. "Formula radio has created a void for that type of music and this Is a great opportunity for people to hear some very nice music.

It should be a whole lotta fun." Barry currently operates a record store In the Northtown Shopping Center, but he said he wouldn't hesitate to return to a full-time radio job if the situation was right. In the late '40s and early '50s, the hip, rapid-talking Barry fronted a free-wheeling session labelled "Swing With WING." He was named I i Gene 'By Golly' Barry the proper sequence. "It's really a lot off my shoulders," Clay said.
