SOAP OPERAS EDIE ADAMS (L), PEARL BAILEY Guest star again on 'As the World Turns' MELINDA FEE GONE Met her maker on 'Days of Our Lives' AMC changes Babbin taking wheel; key characters leaving SHORT TAKES: Pearl Bailey and Edie Adams so enjoyed their guest-starring roles on "As the World Turns" as "those swingin', madcap, single women" Corinne and Rosanne last month, that they'll do an encore on March 18. And watch carefully Hugo Napi in the role of Gunnar St. Clair, who's introduced in one of Barbara Stenbeck's dreams. "Ryan's Hope" has confirmed that negotiations with Ilene Kristen nave been completed and that the actress will return to her original role of Delia Ryan Coleridge in mid-March. Exiting "One Life to Live" is Denny Albee as Peter Jans-sen.

Denny Is recovering from the loss of a job by making the dating scene with Jane Badler (Natalie on "The The couple first met when she played his mentally unhinged wife, Melinda, on "OLTL" two years ago. At that time Denny was married. Now that he's a bachelor again Denny's free to engage in a "fun, non-committal relationship" with Jane. Melinda Fee, who has portrayed several soap opera "bad girls" and who was recently "killed off" as Mary Anderson on "Days of Our Lives," says, "I'd rather play a manipulator, a strong, determined woman, rather than a wishy-washy lady. "When I learned Mary was leaving the show, I asked if there was another way she could be written off than the planned strangulation, since my father was dying of terminal cancer.

I thought the character deserved a better sendof and the producers and two writers came through with an exciting on-location chase sequence through seedy junkyards and back alleys." Nevertheless, Mary met her Maker at the hands of the Salem Strangler, a grisly way to go even though the episode kept viewers on the edges of their seats. Tune in tomorrow for the next soap opera death. By JON-MICHAEL REED Untied FMlurt Syndics NEW YORK There's good news and bad news at "All My Children." The good news is that Jacqueline Babbin, one of the most prodigious producers in the television medium, has taken over the helm of the ABC soap from exiting producer, Jbrn Winther. Winther was no slouch as a top-notch executive. Although he was primarily recognized as a producer of news programs, including "20-20," before his "AMC" stint, Winther's two-year reign at "AMC" resulted in tighter visual pacing and ah elaborate "look" to the show, the result of frequent and extensive location shootings.

Babbin began her TV career as a story editor and adaptor of such dramas as "Member of the Wedding" and "The Picture of Dorian Gray." She produced the TV versions of, among others, "The Crucible," "The Glass Menagerie," and the Peabody and Emmy Award-winning "Sybil." SINCE AUGUST, 1979, Babbin was ABC's vice president of Novels for Television and Limited Series, during which time she inaugurated production on the upcoming "Hanta Yo," "Winds of War," and "The Thorn Birds." Her evident good taste bodes well for the soap industry. The bad news at "AMC," however, is that several key performers have been handed their walking papers. In addition to Carla Dragoni, who lost her virginity (as the character Betsy Kennicot, that is), then her job, Harriet Hall (Brooke Cudahy) and Bill Mooney (Paul Martin) will also soon take permanent powders from the Pine Valley scene. Hall wasn't able to muster the audience support that the original Brooke, actress Julia Barr, garnered. Barr left the show last spring to pursue a Hollywood career that didn't materialize.

Since she's back in New York, it's highly likely that she may be persuaded to return to "AMC." 6 March 14, 1982 TV DateBook.
