evision DAYTON DAILY NEWS Friday, Feb. 5, 1982 Page 38 Cable's 'Bizarre' so crazy even its star is surprised Tom Hopkins Call It cable's answer to Benny Hill. It's "Bi-U zarre," pay TV's first comedy series. There's to be said for any program so flaky it was rejected by the commercial networks. Back in 1977, ABC agreed to air the pilot episode of "Bizarre" with Richard Dawson as host.

Then when producers Allan Blye and Bob (Einstein Smothers Brothers Comedy "Van Dyke and bawdied the show up and pitched it to the networks as weekly series the networks replied, "No, P. thanks, we need a public outcry like we need a hole in the head." And "Bizarre" was sold to Showtime in 11980 with funnymanimpressionist John Byner as host and chief merriment-maker. A Li" poll recently found "Bizarre" to be Show-pi-; time's most popular program. It's already been Picked up for a third season on the feevee channel of Viacom and Teleprompter. jSjJ AT FIRST GLANCE, "Bizarre" might any other repertory comedy show on the tube uncluttered by sales pitches, of course, but a familiar format of comedy sketches and black-j5T outs.

Then you're walloped In the eyeball by a JmL bare boob or a tasteless comedy bit that you know you'd never see on CBS, NBC or ABC. Ui "I 'ftl Kit CtimvieAA Mtircalf GnmaHrVtAtt subjects, Even pay TV has its limits, and Byner admits' the Showtime censor occasionally wags a fickle finger. "THERE ARE JUST some things you can think of yourself that you wouldn't want to see on television," Byner says, "things that are-offensive to a particular group homosexual things, for example. You'd have to deal with those people (pressure groups) comin' through the door. It's best to just stay away from it." Dayton Viacom viewers might notice that "Bizarre" normally runs less than 25 minutes.

That's because there are two versons, one uncensored for Showtime and a milder version with commercials for airing on the Canadian dearth of variety shows on TV has spelled hard times for many comedians. And Byner got so tired of being on the road that he stop ped doing nightclubs too years ago. It's too bad. Byner's uncanny impersonations of people like Ed Sullivan and Richard Nixon put him in the same league with Frank network version doesn't have the bad breath and the four-letter The show is taped in Toronto with a mostly Canadian repertory company. See BYNER, Page 39.

Byner admitted in a phone call from his LA home. "I had a Roman Catholic upbringing and I'll say, 'Hey, you sure we can do And they'll say, 'Yeah, go And I do it and, sure enough, nobody complains. "We don't just go out there and try to be risque, but if something comes along and it's funny and it doesn't look like we're pushing, we'll use it. It's also a plus that we don't have that pressure over ratings. We don't have to keep saying, 'Oh, oh, nobody watched last night' or 'Here comes so-and-so to give us the bad news'." If "Bizarre" has any fault at all, it may be that it's not risque enough.

Viewers accustomed to the excesses of "Saturday Night Live" might find "Bizarre" much ado about nothing. Comedy sketches steer almost painfully clear of character assassination or touchy Byner delivers much-needed, pep talk in segment of 'Bizarre' tZ; 'jaw Prime Time Tonight 2 WDTN 4WCMH 5WLWT 6 WTVN 7 WHIO 9 WCPO 10 WBNS 12 WKRC 14-16 WPTD 13 WXK Lit WKEF 40 WTJC WOSU WCET ft WBTI 8X0 Benson NBC Magazine NBC Magazine Benson The Dukes The Dukes The Dukes Benson Washington Week Movie NBC Magazine Richard Hogue Washington Week Washington Week Subscription QX) :30 Open All Night Open All Night OfHazzard OfHazzard OfHazzard Open An Night Wall Street "Pink Panther Wall Street Wall Street 0:30 9 CO AD-Star McClain'sLaw McClain'sLaw AU-Star Dallas Dallas Dallas All-Star Creativity McClain'slaw Bible Creativity Creativity QfiO :30 Family Feud Family Feud Family Feud Inside Story Again" Praise Inside Story Inside Story 1 fSX) Strike Force Cassie Co.
