The Federal Trade Commission has tried to summarize and explain these possibilities In a new booklet, The Mortgage Money Guide. It explains the various types of mortgages available, defines the terms a borrower Is likely to encounter and even includes a selection of payment tables to help figure the monthly charge at various interest rates over differing time spans. A synthetic, for real There are some 5,000 products that use asbestos in them and many are vital to industry or personal use. That's why the carcinogen cannot easily be controlled. Now a German company, Hoechst Chemicals of Frankfurt am Main, says it has created a synthetic asbestos called Dolan 10, which they describe as polyacrylic nitril fiber. The company says it will safely replace asebestos in critical machine tool and automotive uses. Almanac This is Jan.

From Down Under to up there We reported last year that a West German is among the foreign astronauts who will be parts of the crew on future space shuttle missions.

NASA will train two Aussie payload experts, one as crew and the other as backup. New, but the same old thing Other goodies that showed up at the winter Consumer Electronics Show included an innovation in video game cartridges. The new 2-in-l cartridge, which can be flipped over to provide a second complete and separate game, could save video game freaks a lot of money if it ever catches on, especially since these first double games sell for the same price as each sold individually before. One drawback is that this new technology comes from Play Around, the company that specializes in X-rated adult video games with titles such as Burning Desire and Knight on the Town.

(Play Around is distributed by Game Source, Canoga Park, Calif.) You may remember them from the scandal ensuing after they introduced Custer's Revenge, the first game with rape as its goal, for the Atari system. It's hard to say who howled louder feminists or Atari. Custer's Revenge no longer is on the market. Why not third best? Iacocca in '84, and a Le Baron in every garage Chrylser chairman Lee Iacocca is not running for president, as rumored in the motoring press. He says rumors get started when someone throws out a strange idea, someone takes it seriously and soon everybody's talking about it.

He was talking about it last week at an introduction of new Chrysler cars. He says he won't accept a draft, but if he did, these points would be on his platform: A 25-cent federal tax should be put on each gallon of gasoline sold at the pump. The prime rate has to go below 10 percent and stay there. The Japanese must be told to "knock off their unfair practices" and to bring the yen into line with the dollar. A voluntary or involuntary limit of 1 Vi million cars per year must be put on Japanese exports to the United States.

A 25-cent gasoline tax would stabilize prices at the pumps, Iacocca said, adding that one of his worst fears is that falling gas prices will drive Americans back to big, inefficient automobiles. He has said such an eventuality could kill Chrysler. As for the new models, they include such goodies as the '84 Dodge Daytona sports car, a gaggle of convertibles, and a shameless copy of the Mercedes roadster. There are also some minivans, said to get 30 mpg and carry seven people in comfort. The scuttlebutt is that Chrysler would like to sell them to fleet buyers, especially cab fleets.

Come to think of it, one of them would make a dandy presidential limo. From his good side The ancient Greek leader Pericles had a pointed head, and was so self conscious of it that he would pose for portraits only with his helmet on.
