CO Death Notices Wore JAtfrtf ieei at Rochaways By JOSEPH MODZELEWSKI Thousands of bathers at Breezy Point, Jacob Riis Park and adjoining Rockaway beaches were routed from the surf for the second day in succession when a police heli STATIO oo C5 c2 I VL copter spotted a school of sharks less than 50 yards from shore yesterday. Police pilot John Harley reported sighting the sharks at 12:40 p.m. in Rockaway Inlet near 600 bathers at Breezy Point. Swimmers were ordered out of the water and a Harbor Precinct launch was sent to herd the sharks from the bathing area. Elude Cops at Jetty The sharks, however, swam toward a rock jetty at the tip of Breezy Point and the polite boat was unable to disperse them.

Lifeguards said that bathers were not allowed to return to the water. At 5 p.m., the sharks were still circling the area. Police sharpshooters in boats, unable to fire at the sharks because of their proximity to shore, said the fish ranged in length from five to eight feet. 11 (Reuters) Joseph Vincent Ramus, 72, the discoverer of the human glove identification tech- nique, died here this weekend. 1 Ramus solved 100 murders in a 30-year career. He perfected i the human-glove method of iden- tifying the dead during a murder investigation in western New South Wales in the mid 1930s. When the decomposed body of a young housewife was found in a 1 river. Ramus proved her identity by rebuilding her hands with skin 1 rt moved from her fingers.

The woman's husband was later con- victed of the murder. Ramus was chief of Sydney's 1 criminal investigation branch until he retired in 1955. BEN AFFE Flossmoor, 111., Aug. 11 (AP) Ben Jaffe, 73, insurance executive and hotel magnate, died today in his home in this Chicago suburb. Jaffe was founder and director of Guarantee Reserve Life Insurance Hammond, and had interests in the Fontainebleau Hotel and the Castaways Motel, both in Miami Beach.

He was also president of a holding corporation which controlled the Tropicana Hotel, Las Vegas. JOSEPH J. SCREVAXE A Requiem Mass for Joseph J. Screvane, a retired operating engineer who organized the Operating Engineers Union, died Friday in his home at 1610 Mahan Bronx. SHMUEL DAYAN Jerusalem, Aug. 11 (Reuters) i Shmuel Dayan, 77, father of Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan, died here today. A Jewish pioneer, he settled in this country as a teenager and a founder of a kibbutz (farm- ing settlement) at Deganya on the Jordan River. He was a member of the Knesset for four successive terms.

JOHN WALTER London, Aug. 11 (AP) John "Walter, 95, great-grandson of the John Walter who founded The Times of London in 1785, died today. Walter was chief proprietor of the newspaper from 1910 to 1923.
