In the trial there was no attempt to ahow that the two prisoners did not commit tho deed, but wrote confessions admitting the crime, but the hole question was the constitution ality of the law which permitted the trials to be held here, and with the Supreme Court upholding tho deci sion of the Adams county court it is not believed the pardon board will intervene. 9. John H. Sheads. a civil war veteran and th oldest Odd Fellow of the local lodge, is dead at the home of his granddaughter. Mrs.

Leo Bushman, in Cumberland township, after a lingering illness from a complication of diseases. He was 87 years of age and lived in the vicinity of Gettysburg his entire life. During the Civil War he served in Company F. of the Eight seventh Pennsylvania Infantry, and was one of the five surviving members Of that organization, the four now remaining, one of whom is a brother of Mr. Sheads', all living here.

Predict Potatoes May Drop Below $1.50 Bo. Lewtstowa, Aug. 9. Potatoes are selling on the streets hre at (0 cents a peck. The crop is very large and they will sell later at $1.50 a bushel, if not cheaper.

Peaches are selling at 15 cents a berry box. Charles M. Smith, has an enormous crop with 2.500 trees to pick from. James Harshbarger has 400 peach trees laden with fruit. Corn for table use is high in price, selling at 30 to 40 cents a dozen ears.

Honey is sell ing at 30 cents a box. Beets at 10 cents a bunch, one half dozen to the bunch. Huckleberries at ZD cents quart. Red Lion Borough Will Purchase Park Red Lion. Aug.

9. At a meeting of borough council it was decided to purchase Fairmount Park, which will be offered at public sale on August 14, by the heirs of Catharine Meyer. 9. James Oroome, white, and Joseph Patterson, colored, both of Pondbank, were ar rested at Pondbank yesterday by Sheriff Jacob H. Mayer, of Franklin county, charged with aggravated assault with intent to kill William Rhone, of Pondbank. They will be given a hearing to day. The assailants stoned and beat Rhone as he alighted from a rail road train.

Rhone suffered a broken nose and severe lacerations and bruises of the body. Department of Justice Will Make Another Effort to End Strike Scranton, Aug. 9. Latest developments in the strike of the Pennsylvania Coal Company miners at Pittston and vicinity indicate that the Department of Justice haa decided to make another effort to bring about a settlement and have opera tions at the various mines resumed.
