Cafe the Mt. Vernon Optimist Club held Its regular weekly unchcon meeting with Presi dent Rex Woodward presiding. During the business meeting he reported on the annual sale of Christmas trees. Reverend Robert Freytag Introduced Reverend Dale Harmon as guest speaker and he presented an interesting and amus- ng discussion based on the theme "People Are Funny" which was greatly appreciated by the group. All the other methods of trying to rememher didn't seem to work out for us. This one is, of course.

Infnllahle Incidentally, did you know that various organizations and rermbiMntion projects among invalids welromp your old rards? They are Used in many ways to redecorate items they are remodeling. We'll never forget the time we fnced a bleak and a lour in an apartment and piled up with a of the "flu." We were feeling mighty sorry for ourself when we heard a key In the door unit a moment later a cleaning woman we'd never met wnlked In on tin. She not only put the place In order busied herself around the tiny kitchen and saw to It Hint we ATE. When we offered extra money to her she quietly Informed us: "THESK THINGS HUNT IOR PAY THIS IS WHAT t'S HfMANS IS HEKE FOR AM) IT DIDN'T DO MK Ml Ul'RT." (Each year, HER Christmas card nmong the most treasured we receive.) Here is one of the neatest tricks we've seen demonstrated in a lor.L; time. Your wallpaper can be kept free of un- splashes this way: Hold a sturdy piece of cardboard fla' amnios' the wall with the edge against the wood when you wMilling the woodwork.

'Die cardboard takes the unavoidable water streaks and your paper remains dry and clean Conversation overheard between two boys about eight old: "Hoy oil Hoy, you should have been over to our house awhile I gave ole popsie the scare of hit life. Mom had taken the new ear to town and I yelled here comes Mom behind a big wrecker I didn't say It was TOWING HER because It WASN'T and Dad Isn't In a very good mood with me right now he I gotta a nense of humor Just like Mom's BROTHER and he can't STAND ole IINKIE! and Mrs. Harry Dodds. hSa nd Safu 1,5 Sr Ver A nice, fat 54 per cent of the do-it-yourself ideas admittedly originate in the fertile mind of the little woman. Those are the figures produced by a recent survey. And they just substantiate what every woman knows: that it is the woman in the family who has the vision when it comes to seeing how a home can be improved.

Whether a woman has lived in a house two months or 30 years it never satisfies her just as It is. She is ahvays visualizing improvements to make it more attractive, more convenient, more livable, more up-to-the-minute A man says. "What's the matter with this house? It looks all right to me" when his wife starts talking about all the things she wants to do to it, And left alone, he would probably be willing to live in it without any change for another 10 years. DREAMING. PLANNING, SCHEMING BUT that doesn't stop a woman.

She goes right on dreaming, and planning and scheming. And if there isn't enough money to hire a painter or call in a carpenter or get a bricklayer lo put in a patio, a woman can usually convince a man he's smart enough to do the job himself. And that 's the real story behind the do-it-yourself craze that has swept the na rural yen to keep Improving their homes, plus their practical knack for figuring out now they can achieve their dreams, plus their ability to sell men on their ideas When Joe says, "Come on out in the yard and let me show you the barbecue pit I built," you can bet your bottom dollar it all start ed when Mama got hold of a good recipe for barbecue sauce and started planning a backyard barbecue. She probably had her guest list made out before Joe had any idea he was about to become a do-it- yourselfer. (All rights reserved, NEA Service, Inc.)
