A30 TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19. 1989 LOS ANGELES TIMES Obituaries California IN BRIEF Arnold Moss; Versatile Stage, Film, TV Actor Aileen Pringle, 94; Star of Silent Screen Arnold Moss, a classical actor of diverse ability who was best known for his Shakespeare repertoire yet was a favored villain in films and in the early days of television, died Friday of lung cancer in his home in New York City. He was 80. Moss headed a Shakespearean company, starred in daytime TV soap operas and recorded and performed as a narrator with many symphony orchestras. Moss was praised by critics for his performances as Prospero in The Tempest" in 1945 and as Malvolio in "Twelfth Night" in 1949.

He formed his own repertory company, the Shakespeare Festival Players, and toured 50 American colleges. In movies, he often played the heavy and appeared in "Viva Zapata." "Salome," "Kim," "Gambit," "Casanova's Big Night" and "My Favorite Spy." Moss narrated with the Boston, Detroit and Milwaukee orchestras and provided the voice of God for the 1978 Chicago Lyric Opera production of "Paradise Lost," doubling as poet John Milton. He began his stage career as an actor-director at Eva LeGal-lienne's Civic Repertory Theatre in New York, where his first stage appearance was as an Indian in a 1929 production of "Peter Pan." The ruthless Spanish colonel in Ernest Hemingway's "The Fifth Column" was his first major Broadway role, and Moss went on to win approval for his parts in "The Front Page," "Flight to the West." and "Journey to Jerusalem." Moss also performed on radio as a spokesman for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and as a staff announcer for CBS Radio in New York. The State Department sent him to Latin America, Africa and the Far East as a specialist in theater. 'C iUr.fi hi.

L. Mencken and George Jean Nathan, died Saturday in her Manhattan home where she had entertained regularly since her retirement from movies nearly 50 years ago. She was 94.

Miss Pringle played leading roles in more than 60 films. Two of her best known "His Hour" and "Three Weeks" were based on scripts by Elinor Glyn. Miss Glyn had hand-picked Miss Pringle for the latter role, that of a sensual heroine. Known for her sometimes off-color wisecracks as the silent camera, captured her movements, she was credited with a notable piece of Hollywood lore. According to the book "The Movies." Miss Pringle and Conrad Nagel were filming a scene from "Three Weeks" in which he was carrying her horizontally.

Her lips are seen to move and, according to the book, she was not whispering words of endearment to Nagel but was saying, "If you drop me, you bastard. I'll break your neck." Her other leading men included John Gilbert in adventure movies and Lew Cody in domestic farces. Among her other films were "Souls for Sale." "Earthbound," "Wife of the Centaur." "Beau Broadway" and "Puttin on the Ritz." She continued in films after the advent of sound but never with the impact of her earlier pictures. She made brief appearances in two films of the 1940s. "Laura" and "Since You Went Away," before retiring.

Born Aileen Bisbee in San Francisco to a wealthy family, she was educated in private schools in Europe and first went on the stage in 1915. Her first film was "Redhead" in 1919. Her first husband was Charles McKenzie Pringle, son of a former governor of Jamaica, and her second was James M. Cain, author of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "Mildred Pierce." Both marriages ended in divorce, the second in 1946 after less than a. year.

Psallae K. M.D. CALIFORNIA Two Quakes Strike, but No Harm Done Moderate earthquakes struck the Hollister area of Central California and the Coachella Valley in Southern California, but no damage or injuries were reported. The Hollister quake measured magnitude 4.1 and was centered in an area 13 miles south-southeast of town, the VS. Geological Survey in Menlo Park said.

The Coachella Valley temblor was magnitude 4.2 and was centered nine miles east-northeast of the city of Indio, said a spokesman for the Caltech Seismology Center in Pasadena. SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY Fog HampersTravel, Triggers Pileups Dense fog shrouded the central San Joaquin Valley, closing airports, delaying and canceling school bus runs and, California Highway Patrol officers reported, causing several major chain-reaction pileups. One of the worst involved 12 to 14 cars, pickups and truck-trailer rigs on California 41 near Fresno. No deaths were reported, but there were several major injuries, officers said. There also were chain-reaction pileups in Tulare and near Selma, but no major injuries were reported.

The CHP said another traffic hazard was created northeast of Fresno when about 150 cows wandered onto a road after escaping from a nearby pasture. It took officers several hours to round up the cattle in the fog. Airports around the valley were fogged in until nearly noon. SAN FRANCISCO Wrong Brink's Car Robbed, Police Say San Francisco police believe that the two gunmen who attacked a Brink's Inc. armored car three months ago, killing a company messenger and escaping without any money, mistakenly attacked the wrong vehicle.

Another armored truck carrying more than $500,000 was scheduled to arrive at the Bank of America branch about the same time on Sept 7, but was delayed by traffic, investigators disclosed. "It looks like they may have been planning to hit that one but got it confused with this one instead," said IX John Brunner of the robbery detail. The Brink's employees had just delivered more than $5,000 in Canadian currency when they were attacked. One of the robbers shot and killed one of the messengers and wounded his partner and a bystander who came to the Brink's employees' aid. The robbers escaped on bicycles.

SAN FRANCISCO Park Perils Spark Employee Petition Gardeners and other city workers who tend San Francisco's Golden Gate Park say crime and filth make their jobs dangerous, and they are seeking a crackdown on transients. Park workers who have drawn up a petition asking for strict enforcement of park rules, especially those against camping-say they often find drug paraphernalia, feces and bloody clothing. They also say transients threaten them. "I just pruned and found three needles. You've got to have eyes behind your head.

You always walk around with something in your hand." said one gardener who declined to give her name. The petition, which will be sent to CalOSHA, the job safety agency, was drafted with a new neighborhood group. Committee of Concerned Park Neighbors. In one of nearly 30 statements also being submitted, area resident William Rothrum wrote: "The entire east end is effectively blocked from family use because of the degree of filth and crime being tolerated by the city authorities." Parks Commission President Keith Eichman said the Recreation and Parks Department does not have control over who can enter the park. From Tlnves Staff and Wire Reports I View Chapel.
