A28 I RIDAY. NOV I III 24. I'JJW i.os timi-s Obituaries C.C. Beck, 79; Creator of Captain Marvel Sidney Janis; Innovative and Influential Art Dealer where he illustrated humor magazines. He wound up in New York when his publisher, Fawcett, moved there from the Midwest in 1939, right around the beginning of America's first comic book boom.

Captain Marvel, the muscular super-hero in red tights who was once tickled into helplessness by the fiendish Mr. Mind, was Beck's answer to Superman, who had just arrived at the newsstands. The strip was a tongue-in-cheek serial about Billy Batson, a 15- year-old newsboy who transformed himself into Captain Marvel when he spoke the magic word "Shazam." Captain Marvel would usually save the day by applying child-like solutions to world-threatening problems. Captain Marvel quickly became Superman's rival for the affections of thousands of America's children. In the 1940s, Captain Marvel sold more than 1 million copies a month, the most successful comic book in history.

Beck moved to the Miami area in the early 1940s and stopped drawing Captain Marvel in the 1950s when Fawcett closed its comics division. Beck continued drawing and decorating awnings and storefronts. He moved to Lake Wales, in 1976, and then to Gainesville in 1983. He made a brief comeback to comic illustration in the 1970s when Comics, the publisher of Superman, acquired the copyright to the Captain Marvel character and began republication. Beck was also an avid dollhouse builder and collector of antique guns.

Beck is survived by a daughter, Gladys McGuire of Gainesville; a son, Charles W. Beck of Bartow, Fla.j a brother, Willis Beck of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Janis, with his wife, Harriet, also wrote several books, including a well-known work on Picasso, whom the couple counted among their many friends. Janis opened his gallery in 1948 at age 52, after having spent many years as a leading collector and author of books and magazine articles on modern art, according to his son Conrad, who now runs the gallery with his brother, Carroll. But Janis was impressing the art world with his private collection more than a decade before, the gallery opened.

In 1934, the collection included Henri Rousseau's big canvas "The Dream," which Janis sold to Nelson Rockefeller for more than $100,000, a hefty price for the time. Rockefeller then gave the masterpiece to the Museum of Modern Art. Janis also was famous for his exhibitions and showings of the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, said Conrad Janis, who remembers the family having an art collection "from the time I was a kid." Over the years, Janis and his wife "formed one of the great collections of 20th-century paintings," his son said. In 1967, that impressive collection 103 paintings in all was given to the museum, where a room is now named for Janis. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., in 1896, Janis served in the Navy during World War and was one of its youngest pilots.

At a Greenwich Village party held to usher in the year 1925, Janis met his future wife, the former Harriet Grossman. She spotted Janis in his raccoon From United Press International GAINESVILLE, Beck, the comic book artist who created Captain Marvel a rival of Superman for the hero worship of American children in the 1940s, has died after a long illness. He was 79. Beck died Wednesday at Shands Hospital in Gainesville. He first drew Captain Marvel, "the world's mightiest mortal," almost 50 years ago.

Born and raised in the small town of Zumbrota, Beck was encouraged to draw from an early age by his parents a Lutheran minister and a schoolteacher. "All kids draw," he said in a 1986 news story. "The grown-up artist just sticks with it." Beck started his career as an artist in Chicago, where he drew cartoon characters on lamp shades. Then he moved to Minneapolis, Associated Press Roberto Arias Roberto Arias, 72; Panama's Former Envoy to U.N., England By KAREN DENISE ROBINSON TIMES STAFF WRITER Sidney Janis, one of America's most innovative and influential art dealers, died Thursday morning at his home in New York City. He was 93.

Founder of the Sidney Janis Gallery on Manhattan's East 57th Street, Janis once was described by Alfred H. Barr, first director of New York's Museum of Modern Art, as "the most brilliant new dealer, in terms of business acumen, to have appeared in New York" since World War II. He was among the leading dealers during the period when New York City became the art capital of the world. Janis was a key player in the rise to fame during the 1940s and '50s of such Abstract Expressionists as Jackson Pollock, Willem DeKoon-ing, Mark Rothko and Arshile Gorkyartists whose individual works now sell for millions of dollars. Janis was so important to the movement that when he began dealing in Pop Art in the 1960s, some of the Abstract artists felt betrayed.

Active on the advisory committee of the Museum of Modern Art for nearly five decades, Janis also headed a committee that brought to America one of Picasso's most famous works "The Guernica" which depicts the destruction of a hamlet in northern Spain that was used for target practice by Hitler's troops in 1937. The work remained in the United States until about 10 years ago, when it was returned to the Spanish government. Billy Lee; Child Star of 30s, '40s Billy Lee, a child star of the 1930s and '40s probably best known for his starring role in "The Biscuit Eater," a beloved film about two boys and a dog, has died in Beaumont, of heart failure. Daily Variety reported in its Tuesday editions that Lee had died last Friday of heart failure in San Gorgonio Hospital. He was 60.

From 1934 to 1943 Lee appeared in pictures with Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Randolph Scott, Jack Benny, Donald O'Connor and George Burns and Gracie Allen. For "Cocoanut Grove" in 1938, a story of Fred MacMurray's excursion boat band making it to the big time in Los Angeles, he learned to play the drums. That led him to form the Billie Lee Band. He also was a dancer and toured in vaudeville. Besides 1940's "The Biscuit Eat- legislative assembly, the country's congress.

He owned the newspaper La Hora and was director of the daily Panama America, which are no longer published. Arias married Fonteyn, a dame commander of the British Empire, in 1954. Since 1981, they had lived on a 500-acre cattle farm on the Pacific Ocean near the village of El Higo, 60 miles southwest of Panama City. Since retiring in 1979 at the age of 60, Dame Margot has helped care for the farm and has advised the National Ballet Company of Panama. Arias has four children by a previous marriage.

Billy Lee in 1936 er" (remade by Disney with a new cast in 1972), Lee was seen in "Hold Back the Dawn," "Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch," "Sons of the Legion." "Boy Trouble" and "Night Work." Early in his career he also was seen in the "Our Gang" film series. Lee, whose real name was Billy Lee Schlensker, is survived by his wife, Madeleine, three daughters, a son and seven grandchildren. From Associated Press PANAMA CITY, Panama-Roberto Arias, a former Panamanian ambassador and the husband of British ballet dancer Margot Fon-teyn, has died, sources close to the family said. He was 72.

Arias had been partially paralyzed since a political opponent shot him in 1964. He died of heart failure Wednesday, a day after surgery for cancer, the sources said. A law graduate of Cambridge University and the son and nephew of Panamanian presidents, Arias was ambassador to the United Nations and to England. In 1964, he was a member of the WE'VE EVEN MADE REMODELING CLASSY! Justin time for your holiday shopping (nn TOU'RE INVITED TO OUR FIRST REMODELING SALE. But the two were married within a year. Together, they formed first a vaudeville circuit dance team before becoming one of the premier couples in the art world. Along the way, Janis took a brief sojourn into the shirt-making business. Conrad Janis said his father had three passions art, dancing and tennis "and he maintained them until he was 91." The younger Janis noted that, at his father's 80th birthday party, which was held at the museum, Janis danced the mambo. At his 90th birthday party, Janis danced the tango, his son said.

In addition to his sons, Janis is survived by a sister, Carolyn Ra-port, of Laguna Hills; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A private funeral service will be held Sunday in New York. Conrad Janis said a larger memorial service will be held later. PASSINGS George S. Klrvay; Theatrical Agent George S.
