U.i'i.JM Records Rodney Crowell: A writer who can sing Emmylou Harris band graduate breaks out on his own along with "Toe to Toe." The title may sound boring, but the song is an Country 1 tmm I Mi By Al Freeders "Ain't Living Long like this," Rodney Crowell. Warner Brothers. BSK-3228. A product of the Emmylou Harris band, Rodney shows his boss lady and country audience that he can sing a good song. His vocal talent complements his writing ability, bringing good material to the surface.

Willie Nelson, Ry Cooder and Emmylou give Crowell a hand with such tunes as "Elvira," "Viola, an American Dream," "I Ain't Living Long like This," and "Song for the Life." SINGLES "Heartbreaker," Dolly Parton. RCA. JH11296. This pretty ballad is enhanced by piano, as Dolly once more brings her polished voice before the public and does a beautiful job of harmonizing with herself. Merle Haggard COUNTRY TALK Stella Parton recently wed record producer Jim Malloy Dean Martin is eyeing Nashville as a recording site for this fall Bill Anderson recently flew to Los Angeles to tape a TV pilot as host of a brand-new Goodson Todman game show "Spellbinders." Bill will be home in Nashville soon to go into the studio to work on his next MCA album Margo Smith recently cruised along the Cumberland River in Nashville aboard the Captain Ann, where Warner Brothers held a party for her in honor of her No.

1 record Lynn Anderson is touring in support of her album "From the Inside." She'll be taping her own CBS TV special, "Country Christmas," soon Send a get-well card' "It's Been a Great Afternoon," Merle Haggard. MCA. 40936. Very effective song from the Oklahoma country boy. Merle's simple delivery makes this a super tune with feeling.

"If I'm Gonna Sink (Might as Well Go to the Bottom," Johnny Paycheck. Little Darlin. 7804. When Paycheck goes on record, the results are rewarding. He's got what it takes to be great.

This song is a feather for his cap. "Toe to Toe," Freddie Hart. Capitol. 4609. Freddie strings his single hits right to Donna Fargo, recuperating after entering the hospital in June, to: P.O.

SW 11789. Capitol Records. Bartz gets a little bit progressive with this album. Almost too progressive. But if you're ready for it, go get it.

He's an alto sax man with -some fine backup. "Tropico," Gato Barbieri. SP 4710. Records. A taste of Latin jazz.

Carlos San-tana joins Barbieri on several selections, including "Latin Lady," but the best cut on the album could be "Poinciana" or "Bolero." Barbieri, a tenor saxophonist, has been getting rave reviews from lots of places. This disc is worth the investment. "apt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," Peter Frampton, The Bee Gees and More. RSO Records.

RS 2-4100. In two words, Crap ola. The Beatles should file a lawsuit. "Blam," The Brothers Johnson. Records.

SP 4714. A blend of jazz and rock which comes together nicely under the guiding hand of Quincy Jones, who discovered this guitar-playing and singing twosome. "Ain't We Funkin' Now" falls in the funk arena, while "Blam" and "Rocket CountdownBlastoff" are rock-oriented. The duo saved the best for last, though. "It's You, Girl" and a jazz piece, "Streetway," round out a very good album worth buying.

"In the Night Time," Michael Henderson. Buddah Records. AAA 0798. The former lead singer for Norman Conners has found his starship and taken off. A master at whatever he sings, he blasts away with "Take Me, I'm Yours" and lands smoothly with "One to One." Compared to his other albums, it isn't quite A-l, but an isn't bad either.

"Love Brought Me Back," D.J. Rogers. Columbia Records. JC 35393. Not bad stuff.

Produced, written, arranged and conducted by Mr. Rogers, this platter will do well in any record collection. A lot of brass and soul, especially in the title tune. his man has some talent and disp ys it well. A surprise pi listen for Den-eise Williams.
