SENDING FLOWERS to Madison from South Africa seems to have become an ev-ery-day pastime with ex-Madi-fsonians or with people who have Visited here. The first were some which a woman in Cape Town sent to a patient in the Methodist Hospital here before Christmas.

The second were those which Miss Blanche E. Mitchell, teacher at the Lowell school, received Monday (reported here yesterday) and the third are the huge box of the same fragrant white "chincherinchee" blossoms which Professor and Mrs. J. G. Halpin, 2237 Eton Ridge, received on New Year's day from J.

G. Knowles, a resident of South Africa who took some graduate work here at the university under Professor Halpin. There were a hundred of the blooms in the wooden crate which Mr. Knowles sent the Halpins, and, although they were packed dry and only in tissue paper as were Miss Mitchell's, they were in perfect condition when they arrived and are still as fresh as though just picked. HIGH SCHOOL students, all over the world, it seems, have a headquarters some place in Minnesota where they can exchange names and addresses and thereby work up Interesting correspondences.

Recently Elaine Luloff, junior at East Side high school, got the name of a Swiss girl from the headquarters and wrote to her. Yesterday she received a letter addressed: Miss 2202 Rusk Street, Madison, U. S. A. Elaine had forgot to sign her letter but had included her street address, and the Swiss girl, who lives at Geneva, had answered anyway.

Coming Conventions Brown and Ewald Haase, Milwau- one daughter, are heirs to the editor relaxing for a minute, I tried it out on him. "What do you think about using it?" I asked. "I can see Matron going right through that skylight if you do," he shuddered, dropping the sheet of paper and reaching for his handkerchief.

"That comparatively innocent bit we had last week about them finding the bones and the shirt in the shark's tummy upset him no end. This, I'm sure, would be the last straw. Yes, I can see that skylight in splinters right now." Matson is the managing editor and a bit squeamish about such things, albeit a nice guy otherwise, so I handed it to the United Press man hoping for tougher material. "Guess 111 see if I can put this chocolate bar in the machine and get my nickel back." he said, looking slightly green around the gills, after he'd read it, "guess I don't care for anything to eat right now." "Guess I'd better throw this away and write about Matson and the skylight instead," I said. And if any of you have a curiosity stronger than your sense of discretion, a copy of what my pals found in the "Annual Report, etc." is in the wire basket on the corner of my desk and you can come up and look at it any time.

Or I'll send you a copy of it in exchange for one first-rate, authentic column story. EVERETT MILLARD, a coal salesman from Chicago who covers Wisconsin, has a small brass French horn which ho has converted into a hunting horn and which he carries in his car all the time. Whenever things are too quiet on the road, or Everett is bored with just driving, he opens the window beside him, sticks the horn out, and goes tooting along making the well-known welkin ring for a few miles probably making believe he's a huntsman in a red coat galloping briskly over some English heath after a fox. Until he gets tired then he tosses it in the back seat and forgets about it for another few days. AND THEN there's Professor Philo Buck's hookahs.
