Son of an itinerant Japanese-bom food-picker, he was born in a small town near Berkeley, Calif. When the war broke out, his parents were interred at Phoenix while he was In a sanitarium In Northern California, bedridden in a cast from his neck to his knees. I A government mistake later sent Pat to the first of two different internment camps tn California still separated from his family. "I was confused more than bitter," he recalls, "with all the name-calling and the way people were being treated.

The saving grace was the kids in school --'they treated me like any ordinary Jap. That saves, anybody your peers." i Being called a "Jap" was something he got used to, and he says labels don't bother him anymore. Later, as a nightclub comic, he turned the slurs to his own advantage, calling himself "The Hip Nip," Says Pat, "It came from emcees in clubs who would Introduce me as everything from 'The Hip Nip' or 'The Kamikaze Comic' to 'The Slaphappy JappyV i But there were many years before his nightclub career was to blossom. After the war, he enrolled at Sacramento City College. Soon he dropped out he blames too many hours in the pool room and took a succession of odd Jobs including gardening, Pat apparently was the first Japanese who couldn't raise a garden was an embarrassment to the entire Japanese and he finally got work as a computer programmer.

All the time, he was a closet comic. Pat began to try his luck as a standup comedian in nightclubs. He played supper clubs, toured theBorscht Belt and began getting small roles in movies and TV commercials. Two years ago, he was between Jobs. "I was standing in the unemployment line and saw this script consultant two lines away," he recalls.

"He was on hiatus and collecting a check himself. He said. 'Hi, Pat," and he agreed to put my name in for 'Happy Days'." Now, at 43, Pat has parlayed the role of Arnold into his own TV series. "Mr. and Tina" won't win any prizes as great art, but 30 years ago in an Internment camp what Morita has succeeded In accomplishing would have been the stuff of wild fantasy.
