John "Buddy" Leake, board chairman of Pros' parent firm, Memphis Area Sports, said tahe bid, upped from an initial offer of $1.2 million, has been rejected. Martin's offer was said to be conditional on his being allowed to move the team to Tampa and he reportedly made the bid on behalf of investors in the Tampa Bay area. The Pros were in financial trouble earlier this year and the ABA at that time threatened to sell the club to out of state in terests.

That was before stock was sold to the public in Mem phis to keep the team alive. In discussing rejection of the bid. Leake said, "We had no in tention of letting the basketball team leave the city. The people of Memphis worked too hard to keep it." The Texas Chaparrals, another ABA squad, also have reported that Martin has talked to them about acquiring the Texas fran chise, but said he did not men tion figures. Pros' General Manager Charles Cavagnaro said the Martin offer for the Memphis squad might have been fair while the team was in trouble.

But, Cavagnaro said a lot has happened since then, including a merger agreement between the ABA and th NBA and the acquisition by the Pros of Johnny Neu- (AP Wirephoto) BUFORD GETS THE TREATMENT Don Buford (9) of Baltimore Orioles faces outfield bleacher fans in Chicago last night during first inning of game against Chicago White Sox. By DICK COUCH Associated Press Sporti Writer Those battling Birds from Baltimore have come home to roost without throwing a single punch The Orioles pecked their way to a 3-2 12-inning victory over the Chicago White Sox last night and regained first place in the American League East.

No beanballs were onleSished and no fans were pumrneled in contrast to the Orioles' Memorial Day donnybrook at Chicago. The world champions merely dazzled the White Sox with their foot work this time around. Paul Blair scored the winning run on a bases-loaded wild pitch by Terry Forster the 12th after dodging a tag by third baseman Bill Melton to reach third on Dave Johnson's one-out grounder. Brooks Robinson had tied the game with a two-run single in the ninth after Merv Retten-mund kept the rally going by beating out a slow roller to Mel ton. The victory, coupled with Boston's 6-1 loss to the New York Yankees, sent Baltimore into the division lead for the first time since April 29 with a margin of four percentage points over the skidding Red Sox.

Elsewhere in the AL, Detroit nipped Minnesota 5-4; California edged Washington 2-1 in a ram-shortened game and Cleveland topped Milwaukee 4-2. Kansas City and Oakland were not scheduled. Tom Bradley, Chicago's young pitching star stymied the Orioles on three hits until the ninth when Dave Johnson cracked a lead off single. He took second on a balk, before Bradley walked Frank Robinson and gave up Retten- mund's infield hit, filling the bases. Brooks Robinson then knotted it 2-2 with single to left.

In the 12th, Vincente Romo waucea tsiairs, narang ior re- liovor nirlr Wall nn fniir nitphM Coach Ejected Dun Buford sacrificed and Johnson bounced to Melton, who went for the sidestepping Blair and missed the The White Sox protested that Blair had left the baseline and Coach Joe Lon- nett was ejected. from the game. Forster then came out of the White Sox bullpen, walked Boog Powell to fill the bases and tossed; the tie-breaking wild pitch. Bobby Mureer hit his ninth and 10th home runs of the season as the Yankees routed previously-unbeaten Sonny Siebert and handed Boston its fifth straight setback behind the six-hit pitching of Stan Bahnsen. Siebert, who had won in a row including nine this seasonleft for a pinch-hitter in the sixth Inning trailing 4-0.

Horace Clarke drilled two singles and a triple, stole two bases, scored one run and knocked in a pair for the Yanks. The Tigers built a 5-1 lead and then withstood a three-run Minnesota rally in the eighth to climb within 2V4 games of the East Division lead. Fred Scherman relieved win ner Joe Coleman and snuffed out the eighth inning rally. Dick McAuliffe homered for the Tigers. Clyde Wright checked Wash ington on four hits and drove in the deciding run with a second inning single off Denny McLain as the Angels ended a four-game tailspin in a game halted by rain in the top of the eighth.

McLain, 4-9, has lost four in a row and six ot nis last seven starts. Cleveland's Sam McDowell won his fourth straight for a 5-5 mark, but needed ninth inning relief help as the Indians beat Milwaukee with a flurry of three unearned runs in the third. McDowell, who gave up five hits, struck out eight and walked six, was lifted with a 2-0 count on the tirsi Datter ne lacea in the ninth. Phil Hennigan and Rick Austin finished up.
