I May Be Wrong By Don Fortythe Journal Editor Somehow, during several weeks of Nebraska's spring and. fall pre-season drills, you had the funny feeling that were standing helplessly in line somewhere waiting for a woman to find her car keys in the bottom of her purse. She's certain the keys are there.

You believe her, of course, but begin to wonder as the search progresses. But as long as she keeps poking and scratching away you figure there's hope. The Cornhuskers did a lot of poking and scratching in the spring and much more starting three weeks ago. Saturday they reached right in and picked out the keys as they upset Washington, 17-7. In transferring some of their potential into actual accomplishments the sophomore-studded Cornhuskers indicated that the poise which has marked Bob Devaney's five previous teams will be present again this fall.

Mistakes foiled two promising early drives, but the Buskers withstood these setbacks and were able to capital- Ize when the ball bounced the other way. Encouraging Start There are still a lot of questions to be answered, but the results of the first test are encouraging. As expected, inexperience showed up in a few areas, but it was tempered by the emergence of new strengths. Two key areas here are overall quickness and better speed in the offensive backfield. Based on the Seattle showing these come without much sacrifice in power, the dominant factor in the past few years.

"We knew Nebraska was big and strong. But we thought we'd be able to block their interior linemen better," lamented Washington coach Jim Owens after the game. That defensive strength was expected by Husker followers. There was also an indication Saturday that there will be sufficient power up front offensively, too. It came on the first scoring drive as the Huskers simply hammered the last 22 yards on five smashes over the right side.

Outside Threat, Too In contrast to last year, there will be more than power in the running game. Speed to turn the flanks was provided by sophomore halfbacks Joe Orduna and i Green. They, along with swift fullback Dick Davis, will pose added problems for enemy defenses. The passing game, although not spectacular, produced some timely gains Saturday. Quarterbacks Frank Patrick and Al Fierro were given excellent protection, but a tougher pass rush is undoubtedly in store on future Saturdays, particularly from Minnesota in two weeks.

The aerial defense will also be tested more thoroughly as Washington's Tom Sparlin proved more dangerous as a runner than thrower. Because of a lot of new faces In the offensive line and defensive secondary there is concern about depth in these areas. Liberal substitution, prompted because of the steamy afternoon in Seattle, proved to be no great drawback against Washington, however. What the back-up performers lack in experience they make up for with enthusiasm. Win, lose or draw, this young Big Red aggregation promises to be perhaps the scrappiest and most exciting team Devaney has fielded.

Loaded Kearney State Rolling Again By CHUCK WOODJUNG Unlike h'e litUe old lady who lived in a shoe, Kearney State a Al Zikmund knows what to do. He sends them out to play on the football field. The Antelope boss has a squad of 113 men, more than the University of Nebraska, and he played no fewer than 72 of them in Saturday's 55-6 rout of Washburn. Zikmund, now in his 13th year at Kearney, used five quarterbacks as the Antelopes rang op 410 yards rushing against the Ichabods. "Our running a is strong because we have a good running quarterback in Rich Osentowski," points out Zikmund, "but I think we'll try to improve our passing game. The Tigers were one of only two teams to defeat Kearney last a and, believe it or not, it was a shutout.

A large portion of the 2,000 spectators followed their round. Tiemann presented each of the stars with an admiralship in the Nebraska Navy and Mitchell was awarded a centennial rifle.
