Routine. 'Khan' Ought To Be Called 'Khan 31yslery Fans Psssst an Oriental is moving-into the Friday night ghetto occupied by K'olchak, Chico, Baretta and Sanford and Son. If anyone is circulating a petition to get him out, I'll sign. "Khan!" stars Khigh Dhiegh as "a wily-Asian private Investigator." So sayeth the CBS publicity blurb. Jim Thomas Outdoors ,14, (16) Consumer Khigh Dhiegh as Oriental Private Eye name is Ken Davis. When he was looking for an Oriental-sounding' name, he took his initials and made a stage name out of them. But I digress. The story goes from bad to worse, very slowly. A gambler enters the plot, such as it is', and an assistant coach becomes the suspect.

The first quarterback goes into hiding, something the entire cast should have done. As for Dhiegh, he stares into the distance frequently, apparently trying to look inscrutable. Well, I've scarfed up a few egg rolls that had more personality. In fact, it's 60 minutes of absolutely nothing. All of which goes to prove, I guess, that a wet bird never flies at night.

Ex-Fox-Chief Drops In So who drops into the newsroom Thursday but Bill Self, the Roosevelt grad who ruled the roost for 15 years as chief of TV at 20th Century-Fox. Bill savs they've already made a deal with NBC for their first TV series pilot. It'll star Yaphet Kotto as Crunch, the same role he olavs in the just-released film "Report to the Commission." And their first movie.

"Noon Till Three' with Charles Branson, starts cranking in July. What are the networks looking for these days? "I know what they're looking for," says Bill. "They're looking for comedy. I guess life's too grim these days. But us hard to do comedy.

A comedy writer of mine once said, 'It easier to be brave than to be Most comedy pilots are dreadful. "And you have other things to contend with. We made a very good comedy pilot with Topol last year. It dealt with a Jewish family at the turn of the century. The networks said it was too Jewish."
