Grisly tale of Mayhem and murder. TV HIGHLIGHTS CBS Reports on Two Irelands' Channel 16's First Fund-Raiser Cooked Up Quite a Nestegg Big Bird would be proud. Dayton's fledgling public television station, WOET (Channel 16), has emerged from its first fund-raising and membership drive with enough eggs to fill a good-sized programming basket. From Mar. 7 to 17, WOET participated in the first nationally coordinated membership festival by PBS stations.

It dovetailed nicely with TV 16's organization under the banner of a new nonprofit corporation called University Regional Broadcasting, made up of Wright State, Miami and Central State universities. "It came out fantastically," says Phyllis Lloyd, the corporation's development director. "We ended the festival with 1,867 members, which is really terrific because they told us when we started that if we got 1,000 members it would be excellent." The campaign added about $35,000 to the Channel 16 coffers money that will be used for operating costs, purchase of programs and production of local programs. Folks who contributed at least $15 will receive a monthly program guide beginning around Apr. 1.

Those who gave $25 will get their choice of two LP recordsMembers who kicked in $50 get Alistair Cooke's book, "America," and the big spenders $100 or more will get their choice of items. And all will enjoy a special bonus as Phyllis puts it, "a very good feeling." The result is an sympathetic picture of not so much the land as its people. And ABC just might jettison "Marcus Welby" now that MCA has already sold the reruns of that series to a bunch of stations around the country. On the other hand, I suspect that one show given the kiss of death by Broadcasting, "Hot Baltimore," might get a second chance. If ABC can't make it succeed, it'll be the first time producer Norman Lear has come up with a loser in five tries a fantastic record and axing the show would be a supreme pmbarrassment to the alphabet network. Look for ABC to move "Hot Baltimore" to a new time slot. Channel Hopping Al Gray will host a new black-oriented series, "Uhuru Na Kazi" (Freedom and Responsibility), on TV 22.
