McGuire begged off a question as to wtiether he would like to coach the NBA's New York Knicks, who reportedly will divide Red Holzman's jobs of coach and general manager after this season, refusing to answer because his brother (Dick) is a member of the Knicks' front office. Asked about the possibility of joining the Milwaukee Bucks, a team he wanted to coach six years ago, McGuire emphatically replied, "No, it's a whole different situation now. My deal with the Bucks was to eventually be the president of the team. "One job I would be interested in, would be a firm offer as commissioner of the NBA.

But it would have to be my way," said the former New York City bartender and cabbfe. The Warriors, wtw have played before 20 consecutive capacity crowds at home, are en route to their ninth straight season of 20 or more victories. "One thing I would be proud of would be 200 wins in eight years," McGuire said. He's within a half-dozen victories of reaching that goal now. NEW YORK (AP) -Marquette's AI McGuire, who has recruited a succession of quality basketball players, says recruiting violations could be curbed by placing restraints on both players and schools.

The coach of the nation's ninth-ranked Warriors said. "Any student-athlete should be limited to visiting three or four schools, and colleges should be limited to only 12 or 15 visits. "If he wants a scholarship, the student-athlete must decide between those schools that he visits, and the school would be allowed to give scholarships only to those 12 or 15 student-athletes on its list." Now, McGuire said, every high school player wants to visit the schools with beautiful campuses or the schools located in choice areas, such as Hawaii. McGuire, 45, also criticized what he termed the wholesale televising of college and pro games. "The income-producing sports in high school are dying," McGuire said, "unless we allow the high schools two days a week to allow them to breathe.

Mentioning San Francisco, "where the budget will not support high school sports," McGuire warned that "San Francisco is just the first of many cities where high school lane, saying, "In college basketball, you've got to have an aircraft carrier in the rniddle." McGuire has had some of the best big men in recent years on his teams, but could not get them together, and they signed pro contracts wtiile underclassmen. Jim Chones, 6-11, signed with the New York Nets of the American Basketball and has now moved on to the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Larry McNeill, 6-9. signed with the Kansas City Kings of the NBA, and Maurice Lucas, 6-8, signed with the ABA Spirits of St. Louis. "If they had stayed, that would have been my front line.

Chones would have been a senior, McGuire also talked of the learning experience he's had with this year's team. "I have a team for the first time in my life that I can't hammer I have to stroke them," he said. "We're 18-3 now and I wouldn't want to play the season over no way." However, McGuire did indicate looking ahead to a day wiien he would quit coaching and leave the game. "I hope there's something else besides coaching." he said. "As Peggy Lee said in that song, 'Is that all there But focusing again on his present team, McGuire delighted in the effort of 6-9 sophomore Bo Ellis has done plugging up the DAVE HANNER Hornier to Speak Westport Dinner I Dave Hanner, defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers will be the speaker at the St.

But, supporters of the TT races say, the course is only as dangerous as riders make it. The Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), governing body of motorcycle sport in Britain, will argue before the FIM in Geneva Feb. 20-22, that all racing is dangerous. It will underline that a single TT meeting is the equivalent of any 10 races in continental Europe and its safety record should be WE accordingly. A 10-member delegation will go t0 the neva meeting to plead the lsle of AIan case armed wlth a letter from ACU president, the Marquess of Camden, a former racin8 driver deploring any move to strip the island's TT races of world status.

Neither he, his attorney, nor the Dodgers would divulge the monetary value of the new pact, although it was rumored to be in the vicinity of $90,000.

None of the parties would indicate whether the club had deviated from previous tradition, making the pact longer than one year, either. All parties agreed there was never any thought of taking the contract to arbitration. "World champions have all earned their laurels on the famous mountain course and at one time or another all the champions have declared their liking of the TT." Lord Camden added that withdrawing world status from the series "would certainly be the first step toward a general degrading of the competition and the substitution of a quite inferior championship confined to track circuits." Matzdorf Continues Seven-Foot Spree Pat Matzdorf did it again. Wisconsin's former high jump world record-holder, now competing for the Chicago Track Club, kept up his seven-foot jump pace by clearing that height for second place in the Knights of Columbus Games in Cleveland Saturday night. He had previously cleared seven feet or better in this season's Badger Classic, Wisconsin USTFF, Indiana Triangular, New York Millrose Games, Louisville's Mason-Dixon Games, and now the Cleveland KC Games. Monday night he returned to do 7-1 in practice, and Wisconsin Coach Bill Perrin says his technique is getting "so good, he's going to pop a 74 or 7-5 one of these meets." Road. Motorcycle racing is to the Isle of Man what Yankee Stadium was to baseball and Wimbledon is to tennis. Since 1907, its 37-mile mountain circuit has been regarded as the ultimate test of man and motorcycle. Recently, however, several top riders have led a campaign to boycott the circuit as too dangerous, although defenders of the island say the real reasons nil 3rd 111 Poll first-place votes from the panel of coaches representing the nation's three major collegiate leagues. "At Oakland, our passing game was designed a little differently most teams', with a lot of deep patterns.

I don't know if we'll do it here, but it's one idea that'll be discussed." Roach said he strived for balance with the Raiders, noting "We were always No. 1 or No. 2 in -offense in the AFC, and we'd be 'up there in both passing and running. One year our yardage output in passing and in running were within 50 yards of each other. That's one thing we'll work for here." Leaving a job with one of the best offenses around for one with an attack that needs a lot of help wasn't really a big decision for Roach.

"I'm from Wisconsin (Spring Green), and we spent a couple of fine years with the University," he said. "I always wanted to come back to the state, and getting the opportunity to work with Bart Starr, and for the Packers, with all their tradition, was too much to pass up." Russian Boxer Falls to Death MOSCOW (AP) Valery Popenchenko, 37, two-time middleweight boxing champion of Europe and six-time champion of the Soviet Union, has died "tragically" in an accident, the Soviet press reported Tuesday. The newspapers did not report the circumstances of Popenchenko's death, but a spokesman at the newspaper Sovietsky Sport said the ex-boxer accidentally fell four stories to his death. Popenchenko had been sitting on a stairwell railing at the Moscow Technical Institute where he worked as an instructor and fell off the railing to the floor below, the spokesman said.

Popenchenko was European middleweight champion in 1963 and 1965 and reigned as Soviet champion in his class in 1959 and from 1961 to 1965. He won the middleweight title at the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo and was named the best boxer of the 18th Olympiad by the International Amateur Boxing Assn. i t'Aa -i 1l ft h'i Save krndtit Jr ff if mU Bindings HILLDALE EASTTOWNE Write for free coor folder.
