SMU, its heralded passing game tymied by fierce rush, switched to Richardson's jarring runs to overcome a 10-7 ARgie linlftime lend fashioned on Charlie mgs 38-yard field goal. at Nlpnm stadium is a crucial game for the Bengals.

That'i right. It's crucial. Didn't kirnw they had any crucial games left, eh? Well, this one is. If the lirncals lose It they will be mathe-matically eliminated from the race fur the championship of the American Football league' Western divi- 'They are mere children playing against men men like Ernie Ladd, Aaron F.rown, Buck Buchanan and I'M Lothamer. The shortest of that group Is 6-5; the lightest is ItliS pound.

But there la hope. The Bengals did play well against Kansas City in the first game and Brown undoubtedly will come up with a superior game plan. It was his offensive plan that allowed rookie quarterback Sam Wyche, playing his first AFL game, to complete 20 of 25 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown last Sunday against Houston. And it was Brown's plan that allowed Paul Robinson to rush for 158 yards and move into the No. 2 pot in the league, 17 yards behind Houston's Hewritt Dixon.

Holmes is fourth in the league in rubhing and considered the No. 1 threat to Robinson's copping the honor. Robby wants to be Rookie of the Year so badly that Brown might even consider using him on defense to stop Holmes. It would be a tremendous battle. But, the truth Is, that it can be.

The Bengals have won two and lost seven the last six In a row. Kansas City has won eeven, lost two. For th Bengals to have a chance to tie for the title, K.C. would have to lose Its remaining five games, San Diego would have to lose all lta games except its meeting with Kansas City and Oakland would have to lose all 1U games except its meeting with San Diego. Not very encouraging? Well, what'd you expect? A championship? COME TO THINK of it, no one expected a championship, now did they? In fact, at aeason's start two wlni would have made everyone happy.

The Bengals have those two wins but they made a terrible mistake. They won the two games early In the year. So, everyone now expects three, for or five. They even were talking about a contender back there when Cincinnati was 2-1. It might have been, too, if the Bengal had been in the Eastern division.

After all, they beat Buffalo, lost to Miami by only two points; lost to Houston by 10 and beat the league-leading New York Jets in a pre-ceason game. ..7 i-ri ...111 II I.V-M mil 7 pen from rlwgelt OUiit Mek sMlJ-nii hardon Id run iLewer keck) Rigga RMU-rtichaidnn 1 run (l.eer kick) 3 run iLeiMr kith AfrM Long 11 ae (loin Hargctt (n failed! Sn, the Bengals go Into their 10th game of their season on the verge of being eliminated from the race. What'i more, they don't even stand much of a chance to beat the powerful Chiefs a team that will be seeking an Impressive win for two reasons.

THE FIRST reason is that last week, in an important game, the Chiefs were demolished by Oakland, 38-21. The second reason is that Cincinnati embarassed Kansas City in their first meeting.
