McGraw, manager of the Dayton operation of Graybar Electric is a part owner of the business, the nation's largest Independent electrical distributor. Any company employee is eligible to buy stock after being with the firm two years. Most do.

THE EMPLOYEE-OWNER structure at Graybar, accomplished 40 years ago, was described then as an experiment and has since' been evaluated as a resounding business success. Graybar was started 100 years ago this year as Gray and Barton in Cleveland to make telegraph equipment. By 1872. the company was renamed the Western Electric Manufacturing Co. to reflect a growing diversity.

Manufacturing and distribution were separated in 1926. THE MANUFACTURING arm retained the name of Western Electric Co. The distribution business was named Graybar Electric Co. Three years later, in, 1929, a decision was made to concentrate on manufacturing and dispose of the distribution company. Graybar employees pooled $3 million to cover a down payment on the $9 million purchase.

"SINCE THEN, despite wars and serious business depres--sions, the faitli of our employee-stockholders in the success of their company has never diminished," said McGraw. Graybar had an annual business volume of about $85 million in 1929 when the sale to employees took place, he said, noting that volume has since increased to a level in excess of $600 million. It has operations in 146 cities, including Dayton. The Dayton operation has about 30 employees i four-year-old quarters at 730 E. Fourth St.

The Dayton operation was established in 1926.
