WILLIAMSBURG, Aunijl 18. BY an txpreis irgin inv fiunmu, we jcrn mat oionci M'Lronaici had jult arrived from Wahatomakie, a Shawanefe Town on the Mufkingham, which he has dertroyed, with all their Plantation roond ft, taken three Scalpi, kiiitd feveral of the Indians, and made one Pri foner, with the Loft of only two of his People, and fix wounded and that an Expedition is planned againrt fome of their other Towns, which, if fuccefsful, will probably put an End to the War. Several Parties of Indians are daily feen on this Side of the Allegheny Mountains, but they have done but little Mifchief of late, except icalping one Family on the Head of Cedar Creek, Extrafi cf a. Letter from Frederickfburg, dated the tori Inflant. On Saturday laft arrived in Town two Gentlemen from Halifax in Nova Scotia, which Place ihey left fome Time in July; who inform, that juft before their Departure 840 Cherts of Tea arrived there, which they onderrtood was to be Aored.

They wanted to procure a Freight for a Ship, which, they' fay, brought in Palatines to Halifax; and we learn, by Gentleman from Alexandria, that the Committee at Port Tobacco had wrote to the Gentlemen of that Town, acquainting them of 16 Cherts cf Tea being jme Where in Potowmack River, fo that it is not unlikely hut it may have berrr brought by the above Gentlemen from Halifax, aj a Venrere, to try the Temper of the Virginians. On the 16th twotJentlemen came here fromr Bofton, who trade from that to this Place; they bring the mod pleating Accounts from our Brethren there that can be expected, confidering their prefent Having fufUintd the full Sliock of a totaLStoppage to their Navigation, they now reft contented as to that, and have applied themfelves more to the Cultivation of iheir. Lands, improving their Stocks, the building and. repairing levelling and mending their Streets, Ship building, and are particularly attentive to military Difcipline, in fo much that the Officers of the Regulars acknowledge they have no Superiours. Old Jenkins the Expref, carrie to Town laft Night from Lord Fairfsx's, where he left his Excellency the, Earl of Dunmore, waiting the Arrival fome Arms and A mmurtition from your City, that are hourly expected." The LonfdakCrayfoh, from Wnitehaven, is arrived in York River, and the Mary Jane, from London, at Norfolk, it is faid with a Quantity of TEA on Board bus as the Market for that Commodity is now pretty well over here, at lea ft for fome Time, it is more than probable that it wiil be carried back to London, vihere the fine Ftlkt there may do with it ar they fleafe. To i Mr. I E. I CERTAINLY agree your Correfpondent, the Englifhman, that Combinations enured into hy one Part of the Empire againft another are contradictory to the Principle of Government.

It pots me in Mind of the ancient Fable, which reprefentt the Mem fcers confpiring againft the Belly, to the Ruin of the whole Body. I beg Leave to reverfe the Table, as follows. My Plan is natural, my Moral is juft, and the Conclusion happy. In former Times, the Members were extremely induftrious to provide Neceffaries and Conveniences for themfelves, and efpecially Plenty of Victuals for the Belly; from whom, they were perfuaded," they all derived their Nourifhment. By this Means the whole Body, with a good Conftitution, and a florid Complexion, grew up to fuch Vigour and Statelinefs that it was the Admiration of all that faw it.

But foon after the Belly began to fWell and as buf Defires increafe with our Aequifitions, the more he received the more he craved. He turned lb voracious and thirfty, and welled to fuch a Degree, that People apprehended a Dropfy. Having experienced the Affiduity and Indulgence cf the Members, he Infilled that the Face fheuld not look fo gay, nor the Tongue talk fo much that the Hands fhould work, and not write that the Back fhould pinch itfelf in Clothes; that the Head fhould go without a Hat; and that the Feet fhould have no Nails in their Shoes, or even go without Shoes altogether; and that all poffible Savings fhould be poured into his Gott. The Members began to grumble, and to remonftrate but in vain, fr the Belly had no Ears. At laft, by the Forefight of the Eyes, the Eloquence of the Tongue, and the Acivity of the Hands, together with the unanimous Concurrence cf all the other Members, the BELLY found it neceffary to fubmit to a whalefome Regimen, and to flirink to its natural Dimenfions.

The Confequence was, that the Body recovered its former Vigour, the Face fmikd with Cheerfulnefs, and the Cheeks were Covered with Rcfes. D. Mr. I SOME Time ago faw a little Manufcript, writ by a very ingenious Gentleman, upon the prefect Situation of our In it the Author has admitted this rsmarkable Sentiments The ikobmovs DlBT AMtatCA OWES TO FORIIG.NIRS IS THE ONLY TVR ANT WIICH XCXOS GIVX KIR At ARM. 1 ppffefs, Sir, a Vortune adequate to my Wifhes, enough to fupply Die with all ean reafonably dtfire; yet I live below my Level, have found a Want of a Thouand neceffary Things, and have felt, on many Occifions, my Benevolence retrained, to my own Mortification, and the Diftrefs of indigence, becaufe 1 owt.

This, however, Is private Matter; lot the following Circumflance, with many flmilar, involves great Con sequences. 1 wanted a Piece of Linen. An induftrious Iiifh Family had manufactured aa exceeding fine Piece, and offered me the Purchafe for its Value. I was reftrained from encouraging the Induftry of that Family by having pid away all my Money, and was compelled to run farther in Debt, upon very ill Terms, becaufe I could find Ci edit. The Linen remained long in the Hands of its Makers.

and they have determined, from well earned Experience, to make.no more fine Linen. It is in vain to with, to be either humane, publick or even igneahle and fociable, until our Eftates are unfettered. As for Encouragement to or any othef laudable Eruerprife, we can, in general, only to effect is next to irr.poffible. Let the great Gentlemen of the Land i. e.

Let their Ladies refign Finery to Mrs. Alice Duffing, and others of her Vocation. They will have willing lmiiators. The Dutch, in the Aurora of their berty, took the Garb of Beggars, Gumx and My Lords the States General could never effect any Thing until they could curry about them two or tbiec Days Provifion of Bread and Cheefe, in the Refectory of their Trunk Breeches.

is obvious, that the coarfe Cloth, and Bread and Cheefe, were jwtlua in' themfelves but the Dutch, when determined to be vain no longer, found the amazing Refourccs, they pofTeflid, in what, a Jitile before, va diffipated in the mere Gratification of Vanity. The total SuppuiT.o.i of that PafTion, fo evalent the human Mind, fhowed that a f.nccie to their Country had abforbed every other Affection.
