Oppcrtaalty Jar purfaingher fclows, what mult be the Confequence held up a Shield for cur Defence If our Brethren have pierced it through, and rendered it ufelcft, their Imprudence will, according to the ufua Courfe ofhuman Affair, compel ui to change the Mode of Defence, and drive us Into all the Evils of civil Difcords. Their Conduct never tan prevent the Exertion of thefe Colonies, in Vindication of their Liberty. It may, by Provocation, render thofe Exertion more raft and imprudent j'but their Number will be fo extravagantly exaggerated, as all Facts have been againft on the other Side of the Atlantick, that Great Britain mav be deceived and emboldened Into Meafure deftructive tiherfclf andtous. The Man who fears Difficuttlcaarirlng in the Defence of Freedom is unworthy of Freedom. 1 The Piemier has hinted hi Defire to a great Perfonage of retiring as foon a America is, by his Endeavours, brought to a State of Tranquillity. If this is true, we are not likely to have a Premier for fome Yetterdav Lord Vifcount Pitt, Son of the Earl of Chatham, was intro duced to his Majefty his Lordfhip being Toon tofetout to join hi Regi rnent deftined for America. This Expedition, it is prefumed, is that Gentleman's late propofed Tour to the Colonies. It is talked that there has been more man one interview, between the Premier and Lord Chatham, in the Courfe of a Week. nLaft TueWay Morning a Duel was fought in Sun Tavern Fields, Shadwell, between a.

Hatmaker on Wapping Wall, and a Tallow Chandler in the fame Neighbourhood, in which the latter received a Wound, of be languiihed till Wednefday Evening, and then expired. Their Seconds were, an Apprentice to a Glafs Seller and a Journeyman Hair Drefler. To fuch a Height is this Evil arifen, that it is become as general among the lower Clafs of Mechanicks as among People of yafliionj and every Shop Boy, who has but Courage to fire a Piftol, thinks himfelf entitled, on the leaft Offence, to demand the Satisfaction of a Gtntltma. Pity it that fome Method is not ufed to put a Stop to fo iniquitous a Practice. We are informed that a general Dlfcontent prevails all over Ireland on Account of the Sump Act, and it it expected that next Seffions there will be Petition from all Parts of tliat Kingdom to ParlUmet praying that the.famc might be repealed.

The Miniflry have been greatly alarmed at the Conduct of the tearing the Firmnefs of that moft honourable Body, who are the only People which virtually maintain the upright and independent Principles of the OHveria FirmntJ. Alarmed at their (landing forth to Support their American Brethren, they have left no Stone unturned to warp their Virtue, and to bribe their Leaders. It is pretty certain that the Meafure of exporting frefh Troops to America, rather than changing the Quarter of thofe already ftationed in that Part of the Globe, had its Rife from a Conviction that not a Spoyon that whole Continent can either with Prudence or Safety be left Indicnfible, A dreadlul Hole is now opened between the Mother Country and the Colonies and fome glorious Curtiu muft devote himfel, or the two Kingdoms will approach to Ruin. In Order that the Boftonians ftiall not rcfift the Execution of the Laws of this Country, Lord North propofes to fend qver aco Surgeons, in, Order to draw their Teeth, and render them incapable of biting. With the Death of the French King wUl, in all Probability, expire the Peace ot Europe.

The Lord conclude their Proteft to the Bill for better regulating the Government of the Province of Maflachufett Bay, in New tngland, a follow 1 Parliarrent has affiled the Authority of the Lcgiflatirre of jiis Kingdom, fupreme and unlimited, over all the Membci ol the Bri tiCi Empire but the legal Extent of thia Authority lurmihe no Argu iftent in Favour of an unwarrantable Ufe of it. The Senfe of the Nation on the Repeal of Stamp Act wj, that, in Equity and found Puhcy, rj TaxaUoa of ColonUs, cr the ordinary Purpofc of Suppi, ought to be forborn and that ill Kingdom ought 10 Xuufy itilf with ijie Advantages to be devived from a ftourihing and increafmg Trade, and with the free Crant of the American Affcrtiblic, a being far more beneficial, far more eauly obtained, left jpreflive, and more hKely to be lafting, than any Revenue to be acquired by Pailiamentary Taxes, ac companied by a total Alienation of the Affections of thofe who were 10 pay them, Principle of Repeal was nothing more than a Return to the ancient ftandmg Policy of this Empiie. The unhappy Departure from it has led to that Courfe of Shifting, and contradict') JVealnres, which have fince given Rife to fuch continued Contradiflions, by which unadvifed Plan new Dutie have been impofed in the vtry Year after the former had been repealed, thefe new Duties alterward in Part repealed and in Part continued, In Contradiction to the Principles upon which thofe repealed were given up; all which, with many weak, injudicious, find precipitate Steps taken to enforce a 'Compliance, have kept up that Jealoufy which on the Repeal of the Stamp Act was fubfiding, revived dangerous Queftions, and gradually eftranged the Affection of this Colonies from tne Mother Country, without any Object of Advantage to either. If the Force propofed fhould have its full Effect, that Effect, we greatly apprehend, may not continue longer than whilfl the Sword is held up. To render the Colonies permanently advantageous, they muft be fatisfied with their Condition.

That Satisfaction we fee no Chance of reitoring, whatever Meafures may be purfued, except by recurrinjt, in the Whole, to the wife and falutary Principles on which the Stamp Act was repealed." July 16V THE Inhabitants of Charleftown, South Carolina, have fent about aoo Tierces of Rice for the Poor of this Town, who are Sufferers by the Bofton Port Bill, which arrived at Salem la ft Monday. Friday laft a Number of publick ipirited Gentlemen at Marblehead raifed Subfcriptions for 207 Quintals of Cod Fifh, about 50 Jars of Oil, and 40 1. in Specie, for the Ufe of the induftrious Poor of this Town at this critical Conjuncture of our publick Affairs, which is to be forwarded to mon ow, if the Weather permits. By Accounts from the North, South, Eaft, and Weft of this Province, the Non Confumption Agreement is come into with fcarce a DifTentient in many Towns. Large Orders for Fall Goods have been countermanded, occafioned by the Non Confumptive Agreements.

By bit Exctllency the Honourable THOMAS GAGE, General and Cent' mandtr in Chief of all lit Majefy't Foreet in North America, WHEREAS fome Soldiers have deferted his Majefty's Service, belonging to the Regiments lately arrived from Great Britain and Ireland, this is to give Notice, that all Soldiers who deferted from faid Corps previous to the lotb Day of this Inftant, Month of July, fhall receive their Pardons, upon furrendering tbemfelves betorj, or on, the 10th Day of Auguft next enfuing and on Failure of fo doing, they are not to expect Mercy. Given under my Hand, at Head Quarters, at Bofton, this 15th Day of July 1774. 1 CAGE, By his Excellency's Command, Gab. Match in, Secretary, July 18. WEDNESDAY Night laft our Committee of Correfpondence'rhet, and drew up a Set of Refolves on the prefent alarming Oc cation, which were printed in Handbills, and fent about the Town the next Morning for the Approbation of the Inhabitants thereof, who are to affemble at the Coffeehoufe to morrow at ia o'Clock, either to, approve or difapprove of the fame.

At the fame Time the People are to teftify their Approbation of the five Gentlemen nominated by the Committee to attend as Delegates at the General Congrefs, viz. Duane, Mr. Philip Livingfton, Mr. John Alfop, Mr. Ifaac Low, and Mr.

John lay. Wednefday laft arrived here, from Greenock, Captain Bogg, with about 300 Paffengers, among whom were Mr. Cummings, his Lady and Family, Captain Macpherfon, his Lady and Family, and the.Reverend Mr. Addifon, July 25. Captain Maitland, of the Ship Magna Charta, has brought over a Quantity of Tea to Charleftown, South Carolina but as the Perfons to whom it was confirmed refufed to receive it, the Captain, we are informed, propofes to carry it back with him to London.

From the fame Place, we are informed that a fecond Prefent of Rice from the Gentlemen of that Province, to the indigent Sufferers at Bofton, is preparing to be fent to that Port. Thurfday laft three Tranfports arrived here from Bofton they are now taking in Ordnance, and a Proportion of military Stores, among which are 500 Barrels of Gunpowder; and we hear the Royal Welch Fufileers, now here, are to embark this Week on Board the faid Tranfports, with a Detachment of the Train of Artillery, and to fail directly for Bofton. Friday laft the Brig Matty, Captain Cochran, arrived here from Greenock, with about 70 Paffengers and we are told that a large with 300 Paffengers more, was to fail from Creenock in about 14 Days after Captain Cochran, for this Port alfo. It was laft Week reported in this City, but not credited, that a Soldier on Duty in Bofton had been (hot at with an Arrow by fome Perfjn un known but the Maffachufett's Gazette of the 18th Inftant confirms the Account, and that it happened on the Morning of the Saturday before. The Arrow is a remarkable One, and to be feen in the Camp.

I IAMSBU KG, Auguft 5. ON Monday laft, the 1 ft Inftant, there was a very general and full Meeting of the late Reprefeotatives of this Colony, who ftill continue fitting upon the weighty Matters intruded to their Deliberation by their feveral Conftituents. We cannot, with Certainty, at this Time, publifh any of their Councils and Determinations but next Week we expect to be able to communicate the Whole to the Publick, which (at leaft as far as we are able to judge) will be fuch as will, do Honour to the Colony, reviye the Spirits of our fuffering Fellow Subjects to the Northward, and, in all Probability, fecure the Rights and Libeities of America, from every Invafion thereof. The Refolves of the Con ties of Fairfax, Mecklenburg, Prince Edward, Brunfwick, Lancafter, Suffex, Accomack, and Charles City, are come to Hand which we fhould with much Pleafure have inferred in our Gazettef had it been poflible. We had neither Time, nor near Room enough, for them and therefore can only obferve, that they contain the like patriotick Sentiments with the Refolutioas of feveral Counties already publifh ed, and profefs all due Obedience to the Sovereign of the Britilh Empire.

By a Gentleman from the Northward, we learn that Captain James Hudfon, of Newbury Port, in the Maffachufetts Government, has for fome Years carried on an extenfive SALT WORK at the Town of Salifbury, near that Place, making at leaft aoo Hogfheads yearly of moft excellent Salt, equal, if not fuperiour, to any imported and that, in profecuting the Bufinefs, he has extracted an Oil from the marine Waters that will cure green Woonds, without any other Application. He has alfo extracted the EPSOM SALTS, which have been chymically proved, and found to be genuine. Captain Hudfon likewife fays, that Salt may be made to greater Advantage in the fouthern Governments; which is pretty dcmonftrable, from a late Experiment made by Mr. James Tait, near this City, who, we hear, will be encouraged to per fevere in his Endeavours to ferve the Publick, many Gentlemen having fubferibed confiderably to enable him to erect the ncceifary Works. The fame Gentleman informs ut, that the unhappy Situation of the Maffa chufetts Government (to which Captain Hudfon is a warm Friend) having hitherto prevented his receiving from the Legiflature that Encouragement which he juftly merits, has been gentrou fly patronifed by the People of the County in which he refidcs, who purchafe his Salt in Preference to any other, and have complimented him wkh a very handfome Sum, in Token of their Regard for a Perfon who has in a great Degree devoted himfelf to the Service of his Country.

Extra3 if a Letter from Baltimore 7vwn, in Maryland, dated tit iyh Vlt. It is with inexpreflible Plealuie that I can, at this Juncture, from indubitable Autlicrity, allure you, and tlx refpectable People of Virginia, that a complete Plan for eftabhlhing a NEW AMERICAN POST OFFICE has been lately cxeaited throughout the different Governments in New England. It has been liberally encouraged, and warmly patronifed, by a very confiderable Number of our principal Gentlemen; and no Doubt feems now to remain of its being foon carried into Execution, all over the Continent. Indeed, under the piefcot dreadlul Situation of our Affair, the great and genral Utility ol fuch an EUablifl.n.cnt muft be obvious to cveiy One for, if we coniidcr the Footing on wtych the prefent American Port Office is, we muft hold it to be a Species of baneful and unjuft Taxation, at leaft equally dangerous with any other that we haw Mr. Wiiliam Good aid, Printer here, who has conducted this Bufincls hitherto, intend felting out for Wiiliamfburg in a few Days, that he may be prefent at the general Meeting of your late Houfe of Reprefertativcs, and to lay fctfwc your Committee of Correspondence the feveral approvirg recommendatory Letters he has received, torn other this Sul iect; and if they Rive their Santtiun to c.i,.
