BALTIMORE (Marviam) March 1774. the Inhabitants of VIRGINIA. KNOWING that the Legiflature of your Colony have prohibited INOCULATING for the SMALLPOX, therefore offer myfclf to thofc who may choofe to come abroad to take that Difoider; but as I am almoft an utter Stranger in Virginia, it would he extreme Folly to ex peft much Confidence without fomeching more than a fimple Information to fubjoined Tertimooy, I imagine, will be the beft Recommendation I can give of my Ability in that Branch of my Profeflion. I have underftood that a Prejudice prevails againft Mercury in the Preparation, and perhaps with Juftice, ifufed indifcriminately but as that Change of Conftitution for receiving the Smallpox fa'vourably can be made without it, though not with the fame Expedition, I have always been fparing of it. As I deal in no Secrets nor Noftrums, the Change I apprehend to be made is this i The inflammatory Difpofition of the Blood is corrected, and the Elafticityof the Solids enfeebled; or, tofpeak ftill in a more fimple Style, the Syflem in general is weakened to a certain Degree.

This Mercury effefls, I think, quicker than any Thing elfe yet difcovered. Upon the Whole, whoever comes under my Care may be allured of every Attention being paid in my Power. ALEXANDER STENHOUSE. THE above Alexander Stenbouf has inoculated for the Smallpox thefe feveral Years in this County, and in our Families, when reqnired, with as much Succefi as anyw have bear of in the ProfeiTion.
