The Cavaliers have an effective offensive attack, but lack a bit in pass defense. Steve Menhennitt will make the difference. STROUDSBURG OVER PALMERTON-- An unbeaten team against a winless team. POCONO MOUNTAIN OVER JIM THORPE The Cardinals have had 125 points scored against them in the last two weeks while not scoring once. They're a much better team than this and Jim Thorpe should be the first win of the year. PLEASANT VALLEY OVER SALISBURY Pleasant Valley has only one weakness manpower.

Warriors fo fiosf Wesf Chester ESSC title hopes on line Saturday night EAST STROUDSBURG-East Stroudsburg's hopes of winning the Pennsylvania Conference football championship will go one the line Saturday night in the traditional game a a i a i a West Chester. A capacity crowd of" more than 6,000 fans is expected for the 8 p.m. i at the i Stadium. John R. Eiler, East Stroudsburg athletic director, has announced that the gates i open at 6 i general admission tickets on sale.

The a i know they must beat West Chester if they hope to win the conference Eastern division title and the overall championship. No other Eastern division school has beaten the Golden Rams in 12 years. "As always, we're facing a do-or-die situation in the conference. There is no tomorrow i a Chester," said head coach Charlie Reese. Both Reese and Bob Mitten, head coach at West Chester, are engaged in a psychological war.

Reese a the Golden Rams as well-rounded a football team as he has ever seen. "They have speed, power and size. They can move the ball passing or running and their defense is outstanding," he said. Mitten retaliates by label- ling "tliis the best football team East Stroudsburg has had since -the early 19GO's, even better than the 1968' team which beat us, 21-14." All this talk aside, the key to the contest will be whether the Blast Stroudsburg defense can hold the usually high- scoring Golden Rams in check. Over the last nine years, a i have beaten West Chester four times and in each of these victories, defense was the key.

The scores were 7-6 in 1962, 13-0 in 1964, 13-6 in 1965 and 21-14 in 1968. a i Chester has averaged better than 30 points per game in its recent series wins. The Golden Rams triumphed by scores of 20-0 in 1963, 39-6 in 1986, 33-7 in 1967, 38-21in 1969 and 42-0 last year. Reese and his staff always have a tough job preparing for West Chester and this year is even tougher. The reason is a Rams a a players at all four back field positions so the ESSC defense must be prepared to stop eight different backs, instead of four.

Senior Ernie Forchelti and junior Tom Pierantozzi split the quarterback assignment. Tom Pierantozzi Forchetti is the starter and is regarded as a better field general. i a i is the superior passer and fired for four touchdowns against the Warriors last year. In ils first two wins over Ithaca, 34-20, and Delaware State, 51-0, the Hams stuck to i i yardage on the running of fullbacks Bob Wolfrum and Phil dossier and halfbacks Randy i and Alray Johnson. has gained the most a a (188), dossier (10.2) and Wynings (9.8) have the best averages.

The two quarterbacks have numerous targets to throw at including flankers Bob Croff and Greg Herr and ends Stan Shepanski, Mike Gallagher Two 'out of season teams' to compete for Warriors EAST STROUDSBURG -The calendar reads fall, but two East Stroudsburg State spring sports teams will be in action this weekend. The ECAC golf squad, fresh from an appearance in the Lehigh Valley Collegiate golf tournament, will compete in the qualifying round for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) golf champ i i a University. Making the trip with Coach George Ockershausen will be Jim Cotner and Jim Schaeffer, a on last spring's a Bruce Tom Suess, Rick Weidick and Jerry Mistal. Exley was the team's low scorer in the Lehigh Valley tourney with a two-day total of 159. Mistal was next at 163.

The Warriors placed fourth of Pocono Downs entries Washington says farewell WASHINGTON (UPI)-IUvas 47 years ago--Sept, 30, 1924-when the Washington Senators clinched their first American League baseball pennant. The anniversary of that rare event--Washington has won only three league titles in 71 years--was marked solemnly Thursday as the Senators were playing their final game in the nation's capital before moving to Arlington, Tex. A crowd of 10,000 was expected for the finale at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium against the New York Yankees. Weather Bureau officials predicted some fringe effects from Hurricane Ginger might move into the area by Thursday night in the form of light rain and gusty winds.

Washington was a charter member of the American League, but that didn't sway 10 of the league's 12 owners from voting Sept. 21 to allow Owner Robert Short to shift the franchise to Texas. Short purchased the team in 1968 and has claimed financial problems since, losing close to $3 million in the past three seasons. After Thursday's game, Kennedy Stadium will be hollow and dark from April to September. The strains of the National Anthem and the call of "play ball" may never be heard -again.

City officials and businessmen spent the past week attempting to lure San Diego's team for next season, but Padres officials have remained noncommittal and the outlook for a major league team here next season is bleak. Lehigh was the winner with 771 with Lafayetle, 771, second. The ESSC tennis team will travel to Hider College for the ECAC Division Two tennis championships starting today. Competing for Coach Charlie Wolbers will be Bill Zceh, a highly-touted a dent, and Pete Villano, a Pennsylvania Conference champ i in doubles, and Bob Langley and Ed Burkholder in singles. The Warriors placed second in the same tournament two years ago with Fred Straus and Dave Kozlowski winning the doubles title. Jets' tackle still 'critical' NEW YORK (UPI)-Scott Palmer, New York Jets' defensive tackle who was injured late Tuesday night in an automobile accident, remained in critical condition Thursday at Elmhurst Hospital after undergonga two-hour operation for the removal of one fool of large intestine.

Palmer was injured when teammale Pete Lammons, driver of the car, swerved and hil a utility pole while trying to avoid an oncoming car. and Pete Young. Up front; a Veteran line is anchored by all-conference guards Jack Chambers and Marty Pavelic. If the ESSC defense hopes lo contain this group, il musl come up with an effort even greater than those given in the 38-0 opening win over Trenton State and (he 14-7 i over i Montclair Sophomores John Smith at tackle and Don Coyer at end have developed rapidly and along with end John Sircovics and lackle Joe Ramos give the Warriors a strong front four. The linebacking corps of Bob a Cardone and Hank Kunkel is all veterans and all have been waiting a year to atone for last deteal.

In the defensive secondary, a a a sophomore a a Paul Gube and Jolm O'Gara have fared well in their two outing, but have yet to face long- range bombers like Rorchetli or Pieranlozzi. Againsl either, one mistake often results in six points. The Warriors displayed a potent ground game last week to go with Steve Mummaw's a i a a a touchdowns while halfbacks a a Shoemaker and Bob Lester all ran effectively. The a Got- tslialk passing combination has been under wraps for two games, but may burst forth Saturday. Other starters up front are end Mike Yeager, tackles Ron Sandt and Joe i a i guards Chris Bisig and John Westlake and center Steve Jackson.

West Chester's defense is led by 245-pound tackle Doug Olson and all-conference, free a i Sophomore Bill Edger has been a standout at middle linebacker and last week set up two West Chester touchdowns on a fumble recovery and a pass interception. The Golden Rams lead the i schools, 26-8. One interesting sidelight to Saturday's game i a a a a a i a is a cheerleader at West Chester and will be rooting against her father's team.
