During the last ten years, however, she lias bee.i flooded SO times an increase a thousand per cent. Comprised of approximately 1.00 islands, Venice uneasily rests upon a swamp supported by millions of wooden piles driven in silt and mud. Each year' the city has been sinking deeper and deeper in the mud: each year the seas con- tinue to rise higher and higher. The Italian government and the city government of Venice have been working feverishly to find a solution But many, including Egidio Ortona, the Italian ambassador to the United States, who appears on the "Saga" program, believe that only international help, through the United Nations and other organizations, can save Venice. Produced bv Wolper Pro By TOM CAMPBELL The Fine Art of Psychedelic Rock Or How to Avoid Clinkers in Melody Patterns: At its best, psych-rock is often discordant. Usually, however, there's a method to the madness, a charm in all the cacophony.

At its worst, psych-rock is an un-behevably bad scene. long ago, I witnessed the torment generated by a noke psych-rock group. 1 would have preferred the monotony of musical scales with little, definitive beat from the drummer. Instead, the eardrums were assailed by a variety of sounds not at all psychedelic (unless it was what a hippie might call a rotten trip), and certainly not rock. 1 question whether it was any form of music, recognized or not There are internationally-accepted masters of the art of psych-rock.

The Electric Prunes, Blues Magoos, Beatles and Rolling Stones have all dabbled in it. They know how to play il and play it well. They also learned to play then' instruments first. It isn't sufficient to tune up for four minutes while the amplifiers are warming up and call it psych-rock. That isn't psych-rock either. There has to be a pattern somewhere. It's a music form not designed for amateurs. Some local pop music bands have become fairly proficient at the art. Most of them won't play an entire program of psych-rock.

They say it's too much and use only one or two numbers in an evening to spice things up. Please, beginner's! Learn to play more standard fare first, It's no good to stand there and wail. You'll twang to an empty hall! ON THE OTHER HAND Two local groups caught more than passing attention reeently. They're both very sharp, play well and pack 'em in. Allen Burns and Chris Hay-ward have been able to sell Shondells Sam and Dave's "I Thank You WEEK'S RADIO HIGHLIGHTS Red Carpet for Dog and make more use of Paula's background." "THE MOVIES get us," admitted Hayward, a handsome collar ad type with grey hair. "We'd be fine airing an hour earlier, at 8:30 p.m." Though troth men admit fans don't like to sit still for a half-hour show, they're hoping that the new "Jonathan Winters" variety hour- following "He and She" might pull in the fidgety.

Originally, Burns and Hayward teamed up writing "Bull-winkle" and "Fractured Flickers" for Jay Word, an imaginative, fun-loving man who gave big parties and spent money like a billionaire. Both Allen and Chris played at work with Jay, going to New York for two weeks on a publicity binge, taking in ball games and, while they enjoyed life, the money wasn't staggering and il became time to move on. "Jay never' really thought we'd make it," Allen mused, "He said there would always be a spot for us. And, to tell you the truth, we began to doubt after all those rejections. Nobody knew who we were." i I 3E City Commissioner Wine On Conversation Piece series ideas, but nary a script until Leonard Stern and Arne Sultan signed them for IS "He and She" episodes, and this kind of rejection, while a great help in money terms, hurts.

AFTER writing "The Munsters" pilot, Allen and Chris failed to sell one show to Irving Paley, who always told the boys their ideas fitted "The Addams Family Show," 'to they promptly submitted there and were turned down. The same problem occurred on "My Mother. The Car," a project planned to end all gimmick shows, and on "The Smothers Brothers Show," a "Blythe Spirit" takeoff thai was taken seriously by producers. Burns' and Hayward's pilot never aired, but the men continued collecting checks as creators, and went on to other pilots for 4-Star. hoping to break the ice some day and become accepted as comedy writers.

LAST winter, market time for television series, Chris and Allen's latest 4-Star pilot, with Michele Lee, was up against "He and She" for consideration, so the two screened their competition, and walked with the desire to write for the Dick Benjamin-Paula Prentiss show on married life in the big city. Learning that Talent Associates, the producing house, was asking for sample scripts from miles the airline mistakenly sent courtesy memberships to both for their Ambassador's club, a private club which allows preferred customers the special comforts in each air terminal across the country. "I use the club a lot," grins Falk. "but Seymour has yet to exercise his special privilege. He's still contented with a Bowser Bag.
