The cabbage contains a full proportion of nitrogen in addition to the oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, the elements of the great mass of the vegetable kingdom. The tragic is the predominating element in the domestic news of the week. On Thursday, th 17th, a hecatomb of human victims were offered up to our national demon of Recklessness, whose insatiate maw, it would seem, will never be satisfied.

Another hundred were left in lingering agony many of them reserved to a worse fate than those whose destruction was instantaneous. This wholesale immolation of quivering flesh and blood took place almost simultaneously at three different points, forming, together, a chapter of horrors almost without a parallel. The destruction of the escusion train, near Philadelphia, was too evidently the result of criminal carelessness, on the part oi the officers of the company, particularly of the conductors of the trains which came in collision. And so, too, if the facta are ever known in regard to the burning of the steamers Northern Indiana and Tinto, it will probably be found that carelessness was at the bottom of these disasters. It is susceptible of mathematical proof, that our railroads and steamboats by no means afford the same security for the conveyance of life and property as those in Europe.

It is also an undoubted fact, that most of the railroad and steamboat accidents in this country are attributable to gross carelessness. These facts have been brought painfully before the public mind, again and again, by such catastrophes as those we this week record and still we go on in the same way, every few months murdering victims by scores, fifties and hundreds, and satisfying ourselves by a verdict of carelessness Do. salt or .9 13 Do. do. Attempt to Foist Slavery upon Oregon. The Rochester (N. Democrat makes the following remarkable statement "We expect soon to publish communications from a gentleman of the highest intelligence and of entire reliability, in reference to the purpose of many of the Southern settlers in Oregon of establishing slavery there as soon as they can induce a majority of the people to consent to a State organization. But for the Wilmot Proviso, which was incorporated into the Territorial Act, these men would now claim the right, under the new-fangled doctrine of the Buchanan party that the Constitution tolerates and protects slavery in the Territories, to hold slaves in Oregon and the influence of Government would be used to support the claim. Is there ever to be an end of these things We almost despair of it, and so do others. The occurrence of three such disasters in one day, just as the tide of summer travel is becoming strong, will doubtless keep many at home, this season, who would otherwise have gone abroad. In addition to this wholesale slaughter of men women and children, our record shows a list of about a score of lives lost during the week, by drowning and sun-stroke, in New England alone. The list is necessarily incomplete, but includes all the cases that have come to our knowledge. This sad fatality should impress upon the community the need of greater caution, in exposing ourselves to the heat, in drinking immoderately of cold water when over-heated, and in bathing.

Many valuable lives might be saved, at this trying season, by a little care and prudence. In the political World, nothing of much importance has transpired since our last. The hot weather has but slightly abated the heat of the presidential contest. The doings of Congress are of slight interest. The Senate resolution for adjournment early in August has passed the House, with an amendment fixing the 1 8th as the day.

The "affair" between Messrs. Burlingame and Brooks has attracted more notice than anything else in political circles. Our Massachusetts Representative, who was rapidly rising in public favor, has most completely upset his dish by the foolish course he has pursued in this matter. A man who sanctions the barbarous custom of in defiance of reason, law and religion, cannot fitly represent Massachusetts in Congress, or retain the confidence of her people and the best thing Mr. Burlingame can now do, will be to imitate his "friend" Brooks, and resign the seat he has disgraced.

We have a week later news from Europe, but the foreign papers are unusually barren of interest. A mutiny had broken out among the militia at Nenagh, Ireland, encouraged by the citizens, which was not suppressed without serious effort on the part of the government, and the loss of several lives. There is nothing new in regard to the American question. Breadstuff's had slightly advanced, in consequence of bad weather, but the skies were brightening when the Persia sailed.
