Revson, the New York City cosmetics heir, made history when he became the first to crack the 170 mark at 4:24 with 170.325. It was his best time of the day.

Both surpassed Al Unser's 169.2, which had set a new track mark the day before. Unser, who did most of his running in the morning, could manage only 167.5 Wednesday. The closest to come close to the 170 mark was Joe Leonard, who pushed his Samsonite Special to 168.6. A.J Foyt and Mario Andretti were the only other two drivers to the 163 mark. Foyt's ITT Special hit 167.5 while Andret: ti, who was consistently cheered by young fans all day, was clocked in 165.4.

Others snapping the 160 miles per hour mark were George Snider (161), Art Pollard (161), Dick Simon (163), John Mahler (160), Roger McCluskey (160.5), Bill Simpson (160), Jim Malloy (164.2), Bob Harkey (162.7), Bobby Unser (163.1), and Billy Vukovich (161.7). Although Donahue turned in the best time of the practice sessions, he-says "he still gets lose on the track." "I'm still really not use to it," he said after making his run. "It will take some more time." The yellow light came on five times during the day's action. At 10:45 Greg Weld spun on the first turn, but did not make contact with the wall. At 2:45 Mahler, who was his refreshir test, did a half spin on the same turn, but again no contact was made.

Gary Bettenhausen spun in the third turn at 3:24, but failed to touch the wall. Art Pollard spun at 5:05 coming out of the second turn, but the car continued under, its own power into the pits. Jim Me- Elreath's ear experienced an oil fire at 5:30, but the car came into the pits without incident and the fire was quickly extinguished. 1 Waily Dallenbach got onto the track for the first time since he was involved in the track's initial crash Tuesday. Tuesday he lost control going into the second turn and hit the outside wall with the left rear of the machine then had the front end snap around and slap the barrier again.

The car was too badly damaged to be fixed for time trials. Wednesday he got onto the track in the Sprite Special assigned to Mel Kenyon. Kenyon planned to drive the machine himself, but hasn't been given clearance by the medical staff a i a leg injury at Indianapolis. Besides Mahler John Martin and Bill Puterbaugh passed their driver's test. The only injury suffered during the day's of practice was by Billy Vukovitch the seven-year-old son of the driver.

The youngster fell out of the infield grandstands Tuesday and suffered a chip in the bone in his arm and a cut on his cLn which required 14 stitches. 'J s. 1" National Leagtje? Pirates Aiets Star gel I red hot PhlladelpMs.f San Dtegi) 3-youj! (twlllghll. St. Louis as.

Sufplrsa parly (Kolbe) 20.607.805.00 Pit- stop Peter Revson of New York City gets final instructions from his crew Wednesday before practice at Pocono international Raceway. Revson became the first driver to crack the 170 miles per hour mark at the track with 170.325. Mark Donahue had best time of day with 1 72.2. (Arnold photo) Last week John Mahler was just another driver on the championship circuit.

But now the fastest rookie qualifier in Indianapolis Motor Speedway history has a chance to provewhat he's really like. The Bettendorf, Iowa resident, who was replaced as driver at Indy by car owner Dick Simon, is piloting a 1970 McLaren in which Peter Revson nearly took last year's inaugural California 500 at Ontario. He also has a full crew, two engines and the backing to compete on the rest of the 1971 season starling with the July 3 Schaefer 500 at Pocono International Raceway. After Mahler averaged 170.164 in qualifications, only to have Simon elect to start the car himself, the 34-year- old bachelor's name came into the limelight. Florida International Speedway, which railbirds are saying will be added to the 500-mile list next year, decided it would like to sponsor a car for publicity purposes and Mahler was named driver.

With this backing Mahler went to McLaren and bought the chassis and all the parts left from the 1970 models. He got a friend who had helped sponsor Mahler's setup with Simon to go for half and another friend put up the money for two turbocharged Offenhauser engines which Lloyd Ruby had used last year. While he was at Milwaukee for the Rex Mays 150, he talked Augie Pabst to sponsor the other half. On top of everything else he got what is probably considered one of the best mechanics going Louie Unser, the oldest of the Unser brothers. He will serve as chief mechanic.

Now Mahler, who was without a car at Indy, has gone from a 1968 Eagle with a Chevy engine to a 1966 Vollstedt and turbocharged Ford to the 1970 McLaren with a turbocharged Offy. And it only took six weeks. RandallCo. plaster tiffs EAST STROUDSRURG Jim Randall's homer led an 11 hit attack by Counterman's Drug in beating G.H. Wise's no-hitter, the first of his career, was the second of the season against the Reds who were held hitless by the Chicago Cub's Ken Holtzman on June 3. Wise had a perfect no-hitter until walking Dave Concepcion with one out in the sixth inning.

The walk was the only one of the game for Wise who struck out two. Wise, a 6-foot, 2-inch, 195- pound right-hander from Jackson, has been the No. 1 pitching prospect in the Phillies' plans for the last two years. He adjusted his pitching motion this 'season with the help of Ray Rippelmeyer and has become more effective than in the past. Wise's no-hitter was the first for a Philly pitcher since Jim Running pitched a perfect game against the New York Mets on June 21, 19S4, in the first game of a doubleheader.
