Trailing, 4-3, Juan Gonzalez led off the eighth with a double and Mickey Tettleton followed with a single, chasing starter Al Leiter (10-9). Reliever Tim Crabtree got Ivan Rodriguez to line a ball over first that appeared to be slicing foul.

But Olerud reached for the ball and it skipped off his glove and down the right-field line, allowing the tying run to score. One out later, pinch hitter Rusty Green hit a sharp grounder toward first with the infield drawn-in. Olerud dived and stopped the ball, but his throw to the plate sailed all the way to the backstop and two more runs scored, one on the error. Oakland 000 OOO 001 Beloit Snappers bring home Midwest League title The Beloit Snappers defeated the Michigan Battle Cats, 5-3, Monday night in Battle Creek, to sweep the Midwest League's Class A championship series in three games and bring home the franchise's first title in 14 years. Beloit's pitching dominated the playoffs, allowing only three earned runs in 80 innings.

Opponents didn't score the first earned run until the 61st inning of the postseason. The Snappers' victory capped a 95-win season with seven postseason wins in eight games after a franchise record 88-win regular season. Records equalled or broken by the Snappers, a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate, this season included wins in a half season (45), wins in the full season (88), winning percentage runs scored (723), saves (49), single-season batting average (.324) by Derek Hacopian and single season and career saves record (27) by Chris Burt, a former Beloit Memorial athlete. Easley's return uncertain Damion Easley's knee injury apparently isn't serious, but it hasn't been determined how long the California Angels second baseman will be sidelined. Easley had a magnetic resonance imaging exam on his strained left knee Tuesday, with no major damage detected in the knee.

He was to begin rehabilitation therapy immediately. Easley left Monday's game against the Chicago White Sox in the fifth inning. With the Angels leading, 4-0, Easley saved a run when he went into the hole and made a diving stop on Tim Raines' grounder with a runner in scoring position and two outs. He threw Raines out from his knees, but as he did, Easley put all his weight on his left knee. Around the horn Astros outfielder Derek Bell, who only was expected to miss up to two weeks with a leg injury, will instead be sidelined for six to eight weeks after surgery revealed he had a muscle tear in his left thigh.

Houston Dr. William Bryan intended to remove a blood clot that formed after Bell was hit by a pitch Aug. 22. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Tom Pagnozzi will miss the rest of the season after breaking his left wrist almost two weeks ago.

The injury didn't show up on X-rays, but a bone scan revealed the break. Pitcher Alan Benes, St. Louis' first-round pick in 1993 and the younger brother of Seattle starter Andy Benes, was among six players promoted by the Cardinals from Class AAA Louisville. The victory was the 300th for 39-year-old Buck Showalter, who became the second-youngest Yankees manager to reach that mark. Clark Griffith won his 300th when he was 36. New York led, 3-2, entering the ninth but put it away by scoring six runs off Julian Tavarez, aided by two Cleveland errors.

O'Neill started it with a two-run home run, his 20th, and two more scored on an error by right fielder Manny Ramirez and a run-scoring forc-eout by Jim Leyritz. DeL uda 239. Aft. 18JJ71, Marlins 5, Reds 4 CINCINNATI Gary Sheffield's two-run home run broke a tie in the fifth inning as Florida beat slumping Cincinnati despite hitting into a triple play. The Marlins went ahead, 3-2, on Charles Johnson's single in the fourth and were trying to break the game open with runners on first and second and no outs. But Alex Arias grounded to third baseman Jeff Branson, who started the Reds' second triple play of the season.

Branson stepped on third, then threw to second baseman Bret Boone. The relay to first baseman Hal Morris beat Arias by a step. ER BB SO McCurry 1-11110 0 Plesoc 2-3 0 0 0 0 0 HBP Jo Reed (by McCurry). WP Erlcks. PB Encarnoclon.
