Page 14, Section 1 Wisconsin State Journal, Sunday, June 13, 1982 Beep, new beak doing fine Closed for Inventory Monday, June 14. Breese Terrace At Monroe St. SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) Beep the goose had another new beak Saturday, along with a career, an upcoming TV appearance, an agent and, maybe. Beep T-shirts, a Beep's Beak game and a song.

"She's up. The beak is in place. It looks pretty good," said Joan Burns, an intensive care nurse at the Grand Avenue Pet Hospital. Beep ate her first solid food Saturday, a plate of greens, after Friday's operation to replace her missing upper beak with a plastic one, according to Bunny Ickes, who was appointed as the goose's "agent" by Beep's owner, Larry Day. "We've had a lot of calls," Ms.

Ickes said. "People have indicated they wanted to do a song. We've had a request for T-shirts. Some game people called and wanted to put out a game called 'Build Beep's Day, who also is the pet hospital owner and administrator, found the 7-year-old goose on March 23. Half of her beak had been torn off by a dog or wild coyote and a transplant was attempted using a beak from a goose which had died.

But that beak was rejected. Friday night, in a half-hour operation in front of cameras from the "Real People" television show, dentist Mark Miller, veterinarian Sue Klages and beak-maker Don Kluge, a specialist in facial prosthetics, attached a specially constructed beak to what was left of the original one. "That thing went in there so perfectly I couldn't believe it," Kluge said after the operation. The new orange-colored beak was made of dental plastic and fitted with three tiny brackets for gold screws to hold it in place. A temporary plastic splint was attached to the beak with aviation tape and should be removed in a week if all goes well, Day said.

Beep awakened quickly from her anesthesia and was drinking and honking at reporters within a few minutes. She was fed goose gruel through a tube until veterinarians decided Saturday morning to let her try greens, Ms. Ickes said. "If this (implant) doesn't work, it's back to the drawing board," said Ms. Ickes, who works in the pet hospital's communications department.

The bar, the Monk, was being "used as a front for Hunwick and other criminals in 1980 to 1981," the agent said.

An associate of Hunwick's who worked at the Monk was killed by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in 1980, the stale agent said. Walter Bostic died in a shootout after he and other drug dealers handcuffed DEA agents during an undercover drug sale. Reid Hawley the other man sought in the Chafin shooting was associated with Bostic, DEA agent Eaton said. Although Hunwick was very active, he kept out of jail because "none of his victims ever lived," Adams said. "Luckily, Chafin was brave enough to come forward." Hunwick had more victims lined up, detectives say.

Two south Florida businessmen and two local organized crime associates were marked by the group, Kreulen said. Three other supposed targets were race car drivers Don, Dale, and Bill Whittington. When Hunwick kidnapped Chafin last month, he told him that he was going to do the same thing to the three brothers, Adams said. "We're trying to give the Whittington brothers the benefit of the doubt," Adams said. "We have no reason to believe they are involved in drugs." Officers also found at Hunwick's home a letter addressed to the state attorney general's office from a man whom investigators would not identify.

"I think (Hunwick) got the letter before he could mail it," Adams said. The letter said that a man named Barry and nicknamed "The Bear" wh investigators believe is Hunwick was threatening him in an effort to collect "a fabricated drug debt of $100,000." The man concluded, "If and when you receive this letter, please rest assured that I my family, or associates have met some ill fate at the hands of these above named persons." Detectives do not know if the man is alive or dead, Adams said. Selected woven woods Knight-Ridder News Service FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -Bernard Hunwick. 37.

The husky blue-eyed blond made his living as the leader of a six-member group of hit men responsible for a dozen or more murders in south Florida, investigators say. Hunwick was arrested late Tuesday and charged with the attempted murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery of a 34-year-old Georgia man in south Florida. Alan Chafin was shot five times, robbed of $5,000, and left for dead May 19 near U.S.

Detectives believe Chafin was trying to collect $190,000 from the third man as payment in a drug deal While recuperating, Chafin told detectives that Hunwick and his colleagues have killed 12 to 14 persons in south Florida since 1978, said Brow 'Installation available at regular price. Bernard Hunwick lencers; and $12,000 in cash. Adams said many of the murders were drug-related. Hunwick and his associates including Reid Hawley, 29, who is still being sought on charges stemming from the Chafin shooting work as "freelancers," said Wilton Manors Police Sgt. Ken Kreulen. "That's what makes them so dangerous." Hunwick bought debts for half the atjount owed, then took the money from the debtors and killed them, Adams said.

For some murders, he was paid fees of $3,000 to $5,000, Adams said. Hunwick had "no visible means of support," Adams said. Hun wick's lawyer, Fred Haddad, said his client works in a dress shop owned by his wife, a former Playboy bunny. He said he doesn't believe that Hunwick is a hit man. Hunwick's name is not new to investigators.

In 1974, federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents looked into allegations about Hunwick's involvement with drugs but "we were never able to prepare a case against him," said DEA spokesman Brent Eaton. In 1979, Hunwick was sentenced to five years in prison after he violated his probation on an aggravated battery charge. He has yet to begin serving the sentence, because appeals and motions in the case are still pending. Hunwick attracted the attention of state Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco agents, whose investigation led Magnificent Diamond Jewelry From Europe, Private Estates And Dealers, $3 15,000 ard County Sheriff's Sgt. Dale Adams.

Detectives from other departments and confidential informants have helped bolster Chafin's claim, Adams said. Chafin also told investigators "he personally knows since 1978 (Hunwick) and his crew are responsible for more than 300 homicides, nationwide," Adams said. "I don't think (the figure) is out of line. I think Hunwick and his men are one of the main hit men (teams) nationwide." In their search of Hun wick's home Wednesday morning, investigators found a "hit list" and a black leather "hit kit." The case contained a 9mm automatic pistol, handcuffs, and brass knuckles. Detectives also seized six more guns, one a high-powered rifle; three bombs, including a hand grenade made from a beer can; two si- A NATURAL FOR DAD A Manhattan Nature-Knit Shirt 0NLV A 095 9 Naturally.
