Kiss showed signs of stirring again toward the end, but adjourned for the night after playing only 13 bona fide songs in 75 minutes a skimpy show for a band that boasts of its longevity. In a pairing that ought to be called the Communicable Disease Tour, Anthrax opened with high-octane speed metal in which manic energy and humorous antics couldn't quite compensate for an utter lack of melody. -MIKE BOEHM Blank Guns Asa band, local rising metal ClDVOI Crilt Rob Lowe Cyn CtMITwnCV MASOWAADEIln CynCrttl I Central 6: 15 8 20 (714 682-6900 Slereo JONNNY MOOODIPO-lll Eastland Workmen A Cttrut Unlvirtlty nuci academy kpoi IMv.VtSagt (213) 748-6321 Dannie Quald 9.0.A.II) (818) 330-7333 teif1 Oerinjajuakl jctl-2i5ir2iiDtySt Sleteo.0,A.l (714 762-0600 re Engaoemenll IITTIE NMITAIPOI Beet Actor Acaderny pJomlnetlon 00 AVOtNMO, VITNAMIRI STAND AM CtUVUIPOl POLKI ACADEMY IY l(PO) Alan Akta't MW UFIPO- Matthew Broderlcti StereoMOIIIiUISIFO-ISI Attn A Ida 1 A IfW UHJP-I1 1:001: RoO Lowe MASOUfNAMIII 12: 15-2: 16-4: 16-6: Beet Actor Academy Nomination 0000 AWtrleiM, VITNAMjtl appearing old enough to meet the Lingerie's age limit three times over. With mostly folky versions of contemporary hits, it was to the Triplets' tremendous credit that they could take a song like "Neutron Dance" and make it sound like a rockabilly outtake from Elvis' "Sun Sessions." CHRIS WILLMAN Kiss Misses Kiss has had a long, lucrative run as the Ringling Brothers of rock.

But at the Pacific Amphitheatre on Saturday, the band's heavy-metal circus was more like a stale old animal act than the greatest show on Earth. As always, Paul Stanley cussed and showed off his chest hair. Gene Simmons wagged his tongue at everyone, did his fire-breathing routine and shot fireworks out of a bass guitar shaped like a battle ax. Behind the stage, the band's name flashed in lights. If the tricks were predictable, the beasts at least managed to show their fangs from time to time.

Kiss roared convincingly at the start with 20 minutes of They Might Be Giants is a New York -based duo that's almost enough to give novelty songs a good name. Not that the typical Weird Al Yankovic fan would likely get andor enjoy songs like "Alienation's for the Rich," from the duo's wonderful 1986 independent LP debut, or "Kiss Me, Son of God," one of many newer songs premiered in the pair's first Los Angeles gig Friday at Club Lingerie. Abstract satire aside, John Flansburgh and John Linnell also have a winning way with a pop hook, not to mention a vision of pop society appropriately absurd enough to justify whatever cases of the sillies might come up. And though backing tapes provided most of the music (with the two players adding live guitar, accordion, sax and percussion), TMBG managed to serve up enough bounding energy to satisfy the frat boys who came to hear the better -late-than-never local radio hit "Don't Let's Start." Completing a loose trilogy, Hiatt followed this with a country-flavored rocker about a man hung up on Cadillacs with Tennessee license plates who steals one and winds up singing the last verse as he punches out plates in a prison factory. Pause.

"Let's move on to another city. Heartbreak City," drawled Hiatt, introducing an as-yet-unre-lcased country soul ballad with the warning that "I usually try to avoid self-pity I really do but every now and then I just like to jump right in and roll around in it." Switching to piano, Hiatt wandered into the Lizard Lounge for a bluesy, jazzy number and a second soul -inflected selection from the album that he just finished recording with David it's got strings I can play Lindley, bassist John Doe of and Fairport Convention drummer Dave Mattacks. And so on and so on and scoo-by-dooby-dooby. Along with showcasing the depth and breadth of his songwriting, Hiatt took full advantage of the intimate setting that gave him the opportunity to wring out every sinuous, sensuous nuance in his whisper-to-a-scream vocals. Fortunately, Hiatt balances this church-on-fire emotional intensity with a certain gimlet-eyed humor, as evidenced this evening by his whistling the breathtakingly delicate guitar solo on "Lipstick Sunset," and recognizing the audience's applause with a dry "Take that, Ry" a jab at Cooder, who played the studio version.
