Part March 3, 1988 Los Angeles Times BACKSTAGE: N. Y. Glow Continued from Page 29 Eddie Murphy was going to star in a film biography about him. "I don't think he can do justice to me. But he'll do," said the singer, best known for his frantic rock and roll hits of the 1950s, including "Tutti and "Good Golly, Miss Molly." Moving on to a discussion of his current rock favorites, Richard said: "I'd love to do a song with Michael and Prince, but I don't think Prince will do it -I'm afraid he'll shoot me.

Michael is very humble. But Prince I to him. He's a genius, but I can't get close to Before he was dragged away podium, Richard was asked would pass his fabled the. whooooh! along to. Richard giggled.

"What do you mean? Everyone gone and took it. And they're welcome!" 0 A bubbly album of the year presenter, Diana Ross, showed up backstage and was immediately pelted with a barrage of questions about her mysterious non -appearance at the recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremonies. "I really couldn't be there," said an apologetic Ross, wearing a tight-fitting black dress. "I tried, but with my new baby and everything, I just couldn't make it." When reporters pressed the former lead singer of The Supremes about how much her long- running feud with ex-group member Mary Wilson had to do with her absence, Ross cheerfully responded, "I'm a good person, but if people slap you and slap you -are you supposed to just smile? The raucous media corps payed Michael Jackson the highest accolade. The only time silence descended on the room was when the singer appeared on the television monitors as a nominee for an upcoming award.

And his live performance of "Man in the Mirror" was the biggest backstage show -stopper of the evening. Herbie Hancock, who was taking questions when Jackson appeared on the monitors, immediately cut short his answers, saying, "I want to watch this guy first." However not everyone in the press room was equally respectful. Watching Terence Trent D'Arby's exhilarating stage performance of "If You Let Me Stay," one New York- based writer remarked: "He's great- -in fact, he's like Michael Jackson used to be." Perhaps the most personable backstage visitor was K.T. Oslin. She's not exactly a household name, yet, especially with the Grammy publicity staff, who introduced her as K.T.

Olsen when she arrived backstage after winning best female country vocal performance. To say she was excited would be an understatement. "I feel like I'm going to hyperventilate and throw up any minute now," she said. One smart-aleck questioner asked why Oslin didn't thank the Lord like most country artists do after winning awards. She laughed, replying: "Probably because I'm a heathen." With interest high in the possibility that the Grammys could return to New York on a regular basis- -and with so much media all in one place- -it was inevitable that Mayor Koch would make a backstage appearance.

A bit subdued by Koch-ian standards, his honor introduced himself by saying, "I don't sing, I don't dance. But I do answer questions." Asked about the merits of New York versus Los Angeles, the mayor boasted: "At least here you don't have to worry about falling into the ocean." WRITERS: Guild Rejects Contract Offer Continued from Page 3 Hollywood studios -expired shortly after midnight Tuesday. Contract talks broke off Tuesday afternoon, with no serious progress reported despite a marathon 21- hour bargaining session in Los Angeles that lasted until 7:15 a.m.

Tuesday. Counter said earlier Wednesday that an official of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service in Los Angeles had called him, seeking to help resolve the dispute, but "nothing has been set up." 'Provoke a Strike' The guild, while expressing hope a strike can be avoided, said the last offer of the alliance "seems to be designed to provoke a strike." "We're very disappointed," Counter said Wednesday in giving his reaction to the guild's call for its members to reject the contract offer and approve a strike. "We think we made a fair and reasonable offer." There was sharp disagreement on that from Los Angeles screenwriter Lionel Chetwynd, who during the guild's last strike was in a dissident guild group whose members called themselves The Union Blues. Before the 1985 walkout, his group had urged ratification of the alliance's contract offer, unsuccessfully arguing that it was as good a contract as could be negotiated at that time. Chetwynd, in a phone interview from Los Angeles, said he doesn't feel that way about the alliance's current proposal: "It's a bad offer." He also said he had been among those who voted against it Tuesday night.

Before and during the 1985 strike, he said, there were rifts among guild members in Los Angeles. Not now, he said, adding: "I've never seen a more united guild." Thomas Vezzetti, Colorful Mayor of Hoboken, N.J., Dies From Times Wire Services HOBOKEN, N.J. -Mayor Thomas Vezzetti, the bootlegger's son who took to the streets with a bullhorn to win elections and fight the gentrification of this Hudson River city, died early Wednesday. He was 59. Vezzetti, a lifelong bachelor, was said to have been angered by the outcome of a special election Tuesday in the 5th Ward. A councilman who frequently criticized Vezzetti's policies won a special election over a candidate Vezzetti had sup- ported.

Before Vezzetti's election to public office, he had developed a reputation as an eccentric, sometimes wearing mismatched shoes, orange pants and a Hawaiian shirt. He took a bullhorn in 1982 and walked up and down Washington Street, the city's main artery, to announce that he was challenging the City Council president in the next election. He won, and then used the tactic against Mayor Steve Cappiello in 1985. He forced Cappiello into a runoff. "Clothes do not make the man," Vezzetti said in a campaign debate.

And he beat the three-term mayor in a major upset. ROOF LEAKS? WATERPROOFING PROBLEMS? Retired UCLA Expert. Investigate- Report Recommend -Write Specs. -Administer Replace -Strong Exp. All Bldg.
