DYE GIVEN EMERITUS STATUS: Former Auburn coach Pat Dye was named head coach emeritus in a special presentation Friday. Dye, who retired after the 1992 season amid allegations of illegal cash payments and other benefits to players that landed Auburn on two years of probation, was 99-39-4 in 11 seasons.

Auburn won or shared four Southeastern Conference titles during Dye's reign and he helped bring the Auburn-Alabama series to the Auburn campus in 1989. Dye joins only Ralph "Snug" Jordan, Auburn's all-time winningest coach, as head coach emeritus. FREDERICKSON HONORED: Former Auburn All-America running back Tucker Frederickson was honored by Auburn officials upon his upcoming induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame. Frederickson, who starred in 1963-64, later played with the New York Giants and is now a Florida real estate developer. ft 11,000 career passing yards.

His 261 yards, on 17 completions in 42 attempts, puts him at 11,038. Only Brigham Young's Ty Detmer (15,031) and San Diego State's Todd Santos (11,425) have thrown for more. SANDERS BEATS HIS OWN BEST: Auburn wide receiver Frank Sanders surpassed his previous single-season best by reaching 51 catches for the year, the third best by any Auburn player. Terry Beasley's 55 catches in 1971 and 52 grabs in 1970 are within Sanders' reach. LONG BOMB: Juan Daniels' 79-yard touchdown reception from Zeier in the third quarter was the longest career reception for the sophomore flanker from Norcross.

His previous longest was for 45 yards against Tennessee. Daniels was Zeier's favorite target against Auburn, catching six passes for 109 yards on the night. HARD TO PICK OFF: When Georgia's Robert Edwards intercepted Patrick Nix on a long throw inside the Georgia 10 midway through the second period, it was 1 only the sixth time Nix had been Auburn lizzies while Davis out Wendy Parker AFF WRITER Auburn, Ala. Without Davis, the Auburn ishing attack comes to a grind-g halt. That much was clear hen the SEC leading rusher ft the field in the second quar-r favoring his right leg.

His replacement, Fred Beas- was dropped for two straight Jsses and Auburn vaunted imning game had fizzled as (eorgia held tough, trailing only 6. Without Davis, who already lad 65 yards to that point and pd a 57-yard touchdown run piled back because of a holding pnalty, Auburn clearly wasn't ie same team on the ground. But the injury to Davis was hly a slight bruise to the calf, hd he came back to finish the rst half with 81 yards and reju- tenate Auburn's offense as it ok a 16-9 halftime lead. Early in the third quarter, he ok a pitchout off his right end, len cut inside and rambled for a l-yard score to extend Auburn's dvantage to 23-9. Although Davis managed 186 ards, it wasn't enough to over-tome two Georgia touchdowns in ihe second half that forged a 23-23 tie.

Auburn uncharacteristically failed to capitalize on its opponent's mistakes, as Matt Haw-tins missed a 44-yard field goal try with eight seconds left that could have won it for the Tigers. I "We just didn't make the plays tonight," Auburn coach Terry Bowden said. "This feels like a loss for us." State edges Duke to stay alive in ACC race ASSOCIATED PRESS Raleigh, N.C. Duke's charmed season hit the skids Saturday as North Carolina State rallied in the second half for a 24- Duke 23 victory in a game with major bowl implications. It kept alive the hopes of the Wolfpack (7-2, 5-1 ACC) for at least a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference title with league-leading Florida State (8-1, 7-0), which plays here next weekend. "It winning the ACC title is still a long shot but we have that opportunity," said Wolfpack coach Mike O'Cain, whose program has posted six straight bowl seasons. Duke (8-2, 5-2), seeking its first nine-win season since the 1941 Rose Bowl team, took advantage of three turnovers by Terry Harvey in the first half to build a 20-7 halftime lead.

But Harvey, playing with a separated left shoulder in the second half, redeemed himself with two scoring passes after the Blue Devils built a 23-7 lead. With 1:50 left in the game, Tom Cochran missed a 51-yard field goal his fourth long miss of the game that could have given Duke the victory.
