By Charles Salter and Kent Mitchell STAFF WRITERS Evidence that Greg Gregory of Decatur still holds a good sight picture came with his annual Christmas card.

At 93, the old sharpshooter doesn't smoke cigars or drink tequila anymore, but the legendary outdoorsman still is on target with his revolver. T.C Stevens of Conyers managed the DeKalb Firing Range before the DeKalb Sheriffs Department took it over, and he remembers one day when Gregory switched from right-handed to left-handed shooting. "He was on the pistol range one day and took a few shots. Then he stopped, looked like he was thinking about something, and then finished out the box of ammunition with his left hand," said Stephens, who later discovered Gregory had suffered a slight stroke while on the range. The stroke affected the sight of his right eye and caused his right arm to shake, so he changed hands and continued to hit bull's eyes.

The Lake nine is the oldest and longest of the three, measuring 3,500 yards from the gold tees and more than 3,300 from the blues. It plays to a par-37, although the par-5 eighth hole is in reality a long par 4.

Bunkering is minimal, and the greens are large and not overly undulating. The Hill nine is the shortest (3,0892,888) and friendliest, although the greens are the most sloping of the trio and off-target tee shots are likely to find their way into the tree line. All five par-4s can be reached with a drive and short iron, so accuracy off the tee will be well-rewarded. The Club nine is the most contemporary of the three, with more fairway features and subtle putting surfaces. It and the Lake nine are rated as the toughest 18 (73.4131 from the golds, 70.7127 from the blues).

Lake Spivey is an innovator in agronomy. In 1991 it became the first course in the United States to install Crenshaw bent grass greens. The Lake nine was converted to Crenshaw bent in 1993. By Mike Blum FOR THE JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION "Mom-and-pop" ownership of golf courses is rare, especially in competitive metropolitan areas. One of the last of the family-owned and -operated clubs in the Atlanta area is Lake Spivey, on the ClaytonHenry county border inJonesboro.

The course first opened as a nine-hole layout in 1963 and added nine holes in the '70s and '80s after it was purchased by owner Joe Hamilton, whose son, Geoff, is the club manager. Joe's wife, Sherry, does the Such arrangments "are dinosaurs," Joe Hamilton said, "but I like family operations." Despite the construction of several upscale daily-fee courses in south metro Atlanta in recent years, Lake Spivey has remained one of the state's busier courses. An average of 57,000 rounds are played yearly on its 27-hole layout. Lake Spivey has thrived by offering members and daily-fee players value in a relaxed atmosphere. Lake Spivey is a semipri-vate club, with its membership enjoying one of the best bargains in town, rivaling the nearby Canongate family of, courses.

Unlike the Canongate courses, Lake Spivey splits play between its membership and daily-fee players. But like the late Canongate founder, Bill Roquemore, Hamilton believes in quality golf at affordable prices. "Some places have priced people out of the market, and I hate that," Hamilton said. "But it costs a lot to operate a golf course. You'reinaCatch-22." Lake Spivey's daily-fee rates will be increased slightly in March, but will remain among the most reasonable' in the metro area.
