1 4 Saturday. October 29, 1994 The Atlanta Journal The Atlanta Constitution College Football; Game Day With 200 straight sellouts, Nebraska fans No. I in loyalty 1 chance of it letting up." Nebraska's streak actually started, with a loss, 16-7 to Missouri, but the fans-came back anyway, and from Plainview; to Peru, they keep on coming. Before td day's game, Nebraska will salute 483 people known to have shown up each," and every time during the streak. "Nothing ever interferes with a foot--ball game," swine breeder Willard do, 82, told the Omaha World-Heralds "In Nebraska we sometimes fight like, cats and dogs on some things.

But al-. most to the person, we're behind Ne braska football." It helps, too, that this is a rare state uritVi iiict Ann tn oinr n11o(T0 nrncrrnTti-V "Most places would give an arm and a leg for a coach like that, who can win nine games every season," says Steve Anderson, a local dentist "He's a very hard worker, a very honorable person who is close to the players. Those things are important to folks in Nebraska." Certainly, Osborne, who followed Bob Devaney in 1974, has continued to build upon Nebraska's tradition, despite what the locals call "that 'lil bowl problem." Here are more current NCAA-best streaks: Winning seasons, 33. Nine-win seasons, 25. New Year's Day bowl appear By J.C.

demons STAFF WRITER y- Lincoln, Neb. At R.P. Meyer's bar in the Haymarket district, the "NEBR. 1" bumper stickers on the wall are badly faded. Still, 23 years after the Nebraska Cornhuskers were No.

1 in the final polls, the love for the football team continues unabated. Today, fans will pack Memorial Stadium for the game between No. 2 Colorado and No. 3 Nebraska, just as they have for every fall Saturday since Nov. 3, 1962.

The sellout will extend the Huskers' streak to 200, by far an NCAA best. They've won 1 74 of those games. "One of the reasons of course is we don't have any professional teams to speak of," says Barbara Hopewell, a United Airlines flight attendant. "So college foootball has always been the most popular thing. "I went to school here 30 years ago, and it was the same way.

People just support the team. And they like Tom Osborne." Here on the Great Plains, there's nothing blander than the Nebraska football coach, except maybe his team's ram-it-between-the-tackles offense, which even diehards call "Os-boring." But they do it with a chuckle. ances, 13. Weeks ranked in AP polj, 216. Regular-season wins, 21.

However, being a perennial power doesn't always translate into putting people in the seats for this many years. Sellout streaks at Michigan (116) and Notre Dame (113) are second and third, and those began more than a full decade after Nebraska's. And the best football-rabid the SEC fans can do is Tennessee's 37 straight sellouts. Alabama, every Southerner's football measuring stick, is not even on the charts. "This is amazing," says Devaney, "but I'll be even more amazed on the day that we don't fill it up.

35-21. Nebraska beat Missouri 42-7. Colorado update: The Buffaloes reach the end of a "National Title March" featuring six ranked teams, having beaten then-ranked Wisconsin, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas State. A well-balanced team, Colorado has rushed for 2,068 yards and passed for 1 ,452. Nebraska update: The Cornhuskers, seeking a first-ever national title for Osborne, have been resilient, going 4-0 since preseason All-America QB Tommie Frazier (blood clot) was lost for the season.

Nebraska's punishing ground game NCAA-best 390 yards per game is a key. Players to watch: Colorado RB Rashaan Salaam (167 carries, 1 200 yards, 1 0 TDs); QB Kordell Stewart (93-of-1 43, 1 ,330 passing yards, 7 TDs, 445 rushing yards, 5 TDs); WR Michael Westbrook (21 catches, 420 yards, 4 TDs), and TE Christian Fauria (25 catches, 244 yards, 2 TDs). Nebraska RB Lawrence Phillips (1,233 yards, 6.7 12 TDs); QB Brook Berringer (45-of-75, 527 yards, 6 TDs, 169 rushing yards, 5 TDs); LB Ed Stewart (66 tackles, 4 for loss). Keys to the game: The Buffs must lift themselves for another emotional game. On offense, RB Salaam who had key fumbles against Michigan and Texas must hold on to the football.

Nebraska QB Berringer has to exploit Buffs' secondary, allowing RB Lawrence Phillips and O-line to control the clock. Prediction: Nebraska 28-27.
