C2 Wednesday, April 1, 1998 LIVING The Atlanta Joumal-Constitutloih- Bailey gets boot DJ roulette continues as ill Just as things seemed to be settling down after highly publicized turnovers at talk radio WGST-AM and metal-powered 96rock, Z93 is shaking up its staff. On Friday, longtime disc jockey Bob Bailey said his farewell, signing off after more than nine years as afternoon drive-time host (3 to 6 p.m.) on the classic ON RADIO MIRIAM LONGING PeachBuzz rock station. Although his ratings have been fairly consistent, Bailey said the pink slip wasn't a shock he had been working without a contract for two years. Also, rumors have been flying since Kaedy Kiely resigned from competitor 96rock. RICHARD ELDREDGE 'Colors' critique by GOP'ers continue on Z93, sans Bailey.

But Bailey will still do his blues show at 9 am Sundays. NEW GOSPEL STATION: It's called Glory 1340, and it will soon be Atlanta's newest urban gospel music station. David Dickey, the aggressive young owner of station Kiss 104.7, is converting his two AM properties 1340 and 1230 into simulcast gospel stations, beginning April IS. Although, Atlanta's AM dial seems to be overloaded wjti, Christianreligious formats, Dickey says his programming will be a bit different no preaching, just music. "Research showed us that there was a great hole for a more contem-1 porary gospel station, one that played music 24 hours a day, seven days a week." Glory 1340 will feature gospel music from artists, such as Dottie Peeples, Kirk Franklin and CeCe Winans.

Reggie Gay, who now does; the Sunday-morning gospel show on Kiss 104.7, will be the full-time morning drive-time 'r host TALKING TIBET: Atlanta radio is gearing up for the Dalai Lama's visit On Saturday, the "Paula Gordon Show" (2 pm, WGUN-AM 1010) visits with Lloyd Nick, director of the Oglethorpe University Museum, who will view the exhibit "Mystical Arts of Tibet" (Sunday through June 7). They will be joined by Tibetan Buddhist monk Geshe Lobsang Tensin Negi, who will discuss political threats tn Tihetnn relicrinn anrl culture. Bailey The story goes like this. Kiely was reportedly As for Bailey, his voice will be missed by many fans, particularly classic rock devotees. His seemingly bottomless well of information about the genre is something he developed firsthand.

And he is one of the few radio personalities in town who has never worked in another market A native of Sandy Springs, Bailey began his career at Georgia State University station WRAS-FM. He then spent nearly a decade (1977-86) spinning Van Halen and Aero-smith at 96rock. After two years at 94Q (now Star 94), he took the job at Z93 when it became a classic rock station. Listeners may also recognize Bailey as the guy who left commuters smiling with "Traffic Jam and Jokes," in which 30-second sound bites, from comedians such as Elayne Boos- ler and the cast of Monty Python, were interspersed with the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton to break the monotony of afternoon drive time. The spots were compiled from Bailey's personal computer database of more than 15,000 comedy bits.

Douglas says "Traffic Jam and Jokes" will "Primary Colors" director Mike Nichols made a few shekels the other night off of an unlikely demographic group: the Atlanta Young Republicans Club. After a meeting last week (they meet at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month at Chicago Sports Bar Grill), members of the local chapter decided to head out to a showing of the Ginton-esque comedy at Perim unhappy when 96rock moved her from afternoon drive time to middays last fall. When her contract expired Jan. 31, she opted not to renew.

At the time, her spokesman tossed out a tantalizing prediction, saying Kiely "would be back in communication with her Atlanta listeners." Many believed that meant she'd landatZ93. Z93 program director Dwjght Douglas refuses to confirm or deny that the station has hired Kiely. But get this: The noncompete clause in her 96rock contract expires April 30. And Bailey says that Z93 management originally asked nun if he could do his show until (you guessed it) April 30. Coincidence? The only hint Douglas will throw out is that Z93 will soon be making "a major announcement" E-mail: mlonginoajc.com VI Vjl DOONESBURY By Garry eter Pointe.

Reviews were mixed. "If was extremely sympathetic to Clinton," member and Oglethorpe University senior communications major Phillip Childress, 25, muttered to Buzz afterward. "Basically, the film's message is, 'Whatever character flaws you have can be overcome if you have the right I thought it really toed the party line." Fellow member Martin Detain gave the cruller-chomping John Travolta (above, with Emma Thompson) and company a teensy bit more slack. "I don't think Democrats were walking out of the theater after seeing that and saying, 'Thank God we elected this said the 29-year-old Dunwoody stockbroker. "Actually, a lot of them probably were walking out apologizing.

It just demonstrates how divorced people are from their faith in leadership. America has to learn to live with its truths, whether it's Nixon or Clinton." "Everybody's taking it hard, because it was out of the clear blue sky. It's like one day he was fine, then the next day he was sick with cancer and a month later he was dead. It was a very untimely passing." For more information, call 404-522-8477.

Paramount paid to caption five prints (about for each); Tripod will distribute the James Cameron epic to 150 cities across the country.
