tf There is a special place in heaven for people who own pianos or organs where the sun always shines, the instruments are always in tune, and the keys lock when some hamburger sits down to play Chopsticks. Children are drawn to an organ or a piano especially the ones who are tone deaf. My mother owns an organ. I have watched that poor soul deteriorate from an apple-cheeked loving grandmother to a sniveling, watery-eyed troll. Believe me, it is not easy watching someone you love sit through 100 raggy choruses of "Long, Long Ago" (with drum attachment).

Every Sunday before going to Grandma's, I deliver the same, tired sermon to the kids. "Do not repeal do not ask Grandma to let you play her organ. It gets on Grandma's nerves. I know she pretends it doesn't matter, but I watch Grandma while you are thumping on the organ and last week she grabbed a plastic banana off the coffee table and crushed it in her hand. Take something to do a game, a baseball, or a sedative but DO NOT PLAY THE ORGAN!" Grandma meets them al the door with a big hug and the first words out are, "Can we play your organ, ma''" The repertoire is always the same: "Chopsticks" (played lively); "Heart and Soul" (with another no-talent playing bass), and a pitiful stab at "Love Story" with one finger while the vocalist strains with "How do 1 begin.

begin (higher). begin (lower) begin (between the cracks) ending up eight keys later with the right note. "They're not the King family, are they?" said mother the other Sunday, knotting her handkerchief Sale AUCTION 2 mile N. of Dix then mile W. on Walnut Hill Rd.

tf Happy birthday. Dad. Sandy In loving memory of our dear husband and father, John F. Shlpman who passed away nine years ago, June 2, 1966. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could see dad as he used to be? Wouldn't it be wonderful to see him smile and have him back for a while? Could we be so wrong for wanting him so? When the Angels want him too, you know.

Could we be wrong for missing him too? And all the things he used to do? No, we wouldn't disturb his rest For we know above that God So he called him to his home on high But we will miss him till the day wedie, Sadly missed by wife, Rose, daughters, Rosemary and LaVerne, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and all who love him. By Erma Rom beck and biting on it with her teeth. "Speak up, mother," I shouted over the din. "I said they're not the King family." "Does their playing bother you?" I asked. "No, why?" "I saw a commercial once about a grandparent who was crabby when her grandchildren beat on the piano and it was because she was irregular." "The noise could do that?" she asked.

"I think I have a solution, mother. Give me a week or so." Last Sunday at mother's no one touched the organ. They watched TV, they played ball, they played cards and they took a walk, but not once did they go near the instrument. "What did you do?" asked mother. "Threaten them?" "Nope! Gave them organ lessons with instructions to practice." LAW FOR TODAY Q.

Drawer Mt. Vernon, Illinois 62864 Telephone: 242-3310 AC 618 6-10 Rep. Simon's Bill Would Hike FHA Loans For Farmers WASHINGTON (UPI) Rep. Paul Simon, said Monday he has introduced legislation that would raise the maximum operating loans available from the Farmers Home Administration from $50,000 to $100,000. He said it also would provide a sliding scale of adjustment for the maximum figure tied to possible future increases in equipment, interest, wages and tax rates.

"The $50,000 ceiling just isn't reasonable," said Simon in a news release. "Farm production costs have skyrocketed in recent years. A single, basic piece of farm equipment can easily cost $30,000 or $40,000." Simon said about 75,000 farmers now participate in the Farmers Home Administration loan program, which is restricted to "family farmers" who can't receive the loans they need to stay in business from private lending institutions.
