By Phil Kloer pkloerajc.com WGNX, Atlanta's CBS affiliate, will change its call letters to WGCL on July 4 as part of the owners' ongoing efforts to remake the station's image. The change is primarily concerned with marketing, and will not affect WGNX's position on cable systems or its broadcast signal.

"It's not something you do lightly," general manager Allen Shak-lan said. WGNX has been lagging in the ratings for years, last in local news and under-performing for CBS, although there have been some recent improvements in the station's ratings. "But there's not a lot of call letter identification in most markets," said creative services director Mimmi Mathis, "so I don't think people are going to be that confused." The new letters, GCL, stand for Georgia Clear Television, and will be tied to a campaign in which WGNX markets itself as "Clear TV" and "Clear News," the way WSB uses "Action News" and WXIA uses "Eyewitness News." An ad campaign on WGNX starts today, using the Johnny Nash song "I Can See Clearly Now." To kick off the change, the station will broadcast the July 4 fireworks from Lenox Square, a special that's been aired by WXIA for several years. WGNX promised Lenox sponsors a two-hour show (it has been one hour). WGNX was bought last year by Meredith Corp.

Meredith vowed to make the station competitive in Atlanta, and has added three hours of local news, hired 40 new staffers and broken ground on a digital headquarters in Midtown.
