Funarai, 2 pm today, Higgins A Son Funeral Home, ByWillAndenon STAFF WRITER. Proponents of a giant Taylor County hog farm vowed Tuesday to continue efforts to build the multimillion-dollar complex despite losing the backing of their principal investor, embattled North Carolina hog producer Melvin Purvis. "We're going to build that facility," said Albany real estate developer Larry Morey, who helped Purvis find a lite in Georgia. "When one falls out, weVe got hundreds to take his place. It ain't going away." 1 Neighbors of the site near Butler claimed victory after learning of Purvis' decision.

Jerry Allmon, who helped organize the fight against the industrial-sized farm, said there is too much opposition for anyone to construct a farm in Taylor County as large as the one Purvis proposed Purvis, president of N.G. Purvii Farms Inc. in Rob-bins, N.C., declined comment Tuesday. i But he has been quoted as saying that he was frustrated by delays in the Georgia Environmental Protection Division's permitting process and a court injunction issued in January that temporarily halted" construction of the farm. "I'm very disappointed," Purvis told The Macon Telegraph.

"Considering the extent we were going to protect the environment, the farm could have been a good thing." N.G. Purvis Farms, which operates 11 farms in North Carolina and was banned from building new farms there because of environmental violations, was one of several defendants named in a lawsuit filed by neighbors of the proposed hog farm in Taylor County. age threatening to hamper the effort, the military started its first flight training school for women. Mrs. Howren was one of 30 female pilots recruited to become Women Air Service Pilots (WASPs).

They ferried military aircraft to manufacturing plants, military training centers and points of embarkation for overseas shipment "She flew 30 different types of military aircraft, six of which were fighters, and also B-17s and B-24s," said Gordon Curtiss of Atlanta, who flew with Mrs. Howren at Candler Field. "Most men in the service never got to fly near that many." Mrs. Howren later trained male pilots for the military as a flight instrument instructor in Colorado Springs, Colo. Although she and the other female pilots received much attention for their service during World Warn, they didn't receive GI benefits after the war.

Mrs. Howren lobbied Congress for six years during the 1950s to change that, and the WASPs eventually earned veterans benefits. Upon returning to Atlanta, Mrs. Howren became the first woman in Georgia to open a flight school. She started Flight-ways Inc.

at Candler Field with her husband, the late Hillman Howren, Flightways offered a charter service, flying lessons and aerial photography classes. It also featured service and repair work. The Howrens also ran an airline fueling business, AirRe-fuel, out of Hartsfield International Airport until their retirement in 1968, when they sold the business to Lockheed. In retirement, the Howrens enjoyed traveling, deep-sea fishing and sailing. There are no immediate survivors.
