THE HIAWATHALAND Wednesday, August 29, 1973 THE HIAWATHALAND Wednesday, August 29, 1973 Brighton optimistic about Bays' chances in EUP grid conference BACKFIELD HOPEFULS Bays' coach Jack Brighton practices handoff with backfield hopefuls Alan Carrick and senior Russ Chartrand. If size, interest and numbers have anything to do with helping forge a winner in high school football these days, then Brimley coach Jack Brighton must be optimistic about his Bay's chances this season in the EUPC. Brimley has no less than 40 candidates out for this year's team-more by far than any other team in the conference and almost as many as Sault High, a Class A school. "I'm optimistic to a point," said Brighton when Basked about his team's chances. "We have 19 letter winners back from last season and we're bigger than we've been in the past But, we face a tough schedule and will be playing a lot of inexperienced kids." Senior letter winners returning to the team this EXPERIENCE UP FRONT Brimley's returning senior linemen (L to R): Brian Deuman, Irving Teeple, Mike Link, Bob AAcCormic and Steve Wilson provide Coach Jack Brighton with depth and experience the '72 Bays lacked.

season include: Bob McCormick at guard, Brian Deuman at fullback, Steve Wilson at end, Mike Link at center, Russ Chartrand at halfback, Kevin Schwiderson at halfback, Justin Carrick at quarterback and Irving Teeple at tackle. Juniors returning for another year include: guard Tom Watchorn, end Gordon Parish, end Mike Weston, back Denny Holdsworth, center Elvin Veldt, guard Stuart Parish and halfback Don Morningstar. Sophomore veterans include: Tom Harris at tackle, Walt Hyvarinen at back and Al Carrick at halfback. Brighton has several new faces out for the team this year that should add depth. Senior quarterback Dean Parish will fight it out with senior Justin Carrick for the starting job calling signals.

Parish is 6-1, 185 pounds and throws well while Carrick was a starter last season as a junior. Jim Phillips and Keith Swenson are a pair of senior running backs that should add much to the Bays' backfield hi '73. Don Armstrong is a junior first year man who will play tackle and center while Tony Evou will" see action at a tackle slot. In addition Brighton has 10 frosh candidates out. Our biggest problems will be inexperience and our schedule," said Brighton.

"But, we would rather tackle a tough schedule and play some football than be a winner with a pat slate." Brimley opens the season with Cedarville on the Trojans home field. Also on Brimley's schedule are: Cheboygan Catholic, East Jordan and the state's top Class team last season, Inland Lakes. Brighton is undecided about all starting positions at this point, but will most likely go with a backfield of Deuman at fullback with Schwiderson and Chartrand at the halfs and either Carrick or Parish at quarterback. Deuman, at 6-2, 220 pounds and Chartrand at pose one of the best sized backfields in the conference. Parish is big and strong and Brighton may use him at fullback should Carrick assume quarterbacking duties.

In the line, it'll be Link or Armstrong at center with McCormick and Watchorn at the guards and Irving Teeple at one tackle. The other tackle slot is up for grabs right now. The ends should be Gordon Teeple and Mike Weston with a possibility of Deuman assuming a spot there. At any rate, the Bays are looking improved and stronger this season. They should be a dark horse candidate for conference honors.
