Southern 28, Fla. 14 Game reports, E12 Braves give up; view from top one more time LOS ANGELES The undoing of the Los Angeles Dodgers had been soooo with the emphasis on the Os easy. Too easy. Could the Braves really blow through town, leave a trail of zeroes behind them, and screw down the lid on the NL West? What a concept. What a lie those first 1 6 shutout innings were.

In the twist of a knife, the Dodgers retook first place in the division with a 2-1 victory over the Braves Saturday night. The Braves may have won 16 of the 18 innings so far played in this series, but all they have to show for it is a split. The final head-to-head meeting is this afternoon, with only another temporary advantage to be won. This surely is the pennant race that refuses to find a pattern, one that defies ownership. We can't keep going on like this, these two teams exchanging first ahead of Atlanta.

If the Braves fall short, they might cringe when they look back on this game. "Charlie Leibrandt can't pitch any better than that," said manager Bobby Cox in a quiet clubhouse as many players sat speechless at their lockers. "We definitely were in position to win. We just had two of the best make errors. It's going to happen." Added Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, "This was something we desperately needed.

Thay guy kept getting us out. We had to wonder when we were going to score on the guy." Leibrandt, like Steve Avery in his shutout the night before, had the Dodgers fooled. Given a 1-0 lead in the third on a Pendleton triple and David Justice grounder off Orel Hershiser, he appeared headed for his seventh straight win, allowing just two hits through seven innings. At that point, the Dodgers had scored just one rim in their last 35 innings against Atlanta. Please see BRAVES, E13 By IJ.

Rosenberg Staffwriter LOS ANGELES -The Atlanta Braves were six outs away from sticking another dagger in the heart of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Six outs away from going home alone in first, no matter what happened in today's series finale. But as shortstop Rafael Bel-liard would say, "We had been making the plays all night, then two balls slipped away." And so did the game. Watching the Dodgers tie the score in the eighth on errors by Belliard and third baseman Ter-S ry Pendleton and win in the ninth, the Braves dropped back into second place in this seesaw race for the National League West title, losing 2-1 before 48,051 at Dodger Stadium. The win, which came with one out in the ninth when Juan Samuel tripled off reliever Mike Stanton (3-4) to drive home Kal Daniels, was the Dodgers' first over the Braves in the past four games and put them a half-game place like it was an ugly necktie.

Something has to give, before the hearts begin to. Entering the bottom of the eighth Saturday, the Braves, leading 1-0, there were strange visions visiting. Visions of the1 first back-to-back Braves shut-; outs since 1982. Ideas about Atlanta actually gaining a clear advantage in this stadium among the palms. You began wondering when the Dodgers might score their; next run.

While his team might be a slow learner, Alabama coach Gene Stallings's squad knew enough to answer the door Saturday night when opportunity knocked a second time.

Before a regional television audience and a sellout Bryant-Denny Stadium crowd of 70,123, the Crimson Tide beat Georgia 10-0 in a game neither side could take much comfort from. As it has been for many of Stallings's 15 games at Alabama, the Crimson Tide (2-1 this season, 1-1 in the SEC), was Sloppy on offense, killing a series of crucial drives with mental mistakes and missed assignments. But it was Georgia (2-1, 1-1) that inflicted the biggest blow upon "I thought it was a game of missed opportunities on both sides," Stallings said. And in the end, Georgia missed more. After replacing starter Greg Talley, Bulldogs freshman quarterback Eric Zeier engineered' back-to-back third-quarter drives to the Alabama 5 and 8 only to come away with no points.

And after Georgia's Todd Peterson missed a 24-yard field goal with 3:51 left in the third quarter, Alabama mounted an 80-yard drive capped by Siran Stacy's four-yard touchdown run. "It was our game to win," cor-nerback Chuck Carswell said. "The whole way." But instead of winning its first game ever in six tries in Tuscaloosa, Georgia, plagued by a weak offensive line and a pair of critical defensive penalties, suffered its first shutout since losing to Florida 27-0 in 1984. "We had our opportunities," Georgia coach Ray Goff said. But despite Zeier's performance in the third quarter, Georgia couldn't take advantage of them.

Zeier, who had a 42-yard pass to Kevin Maxwell to the Alabama 1 in the first half nullified because he was past the line of scrimmage when he threw the ball, drove Georgia to the Tide 5 to open the second half. After Georgia stopped Alabama on the next series, a 35-yard punt return by Carswell set up another Zeier-directed drive to the Alabama 8, where Peterson missed the field goal. "I felt like I hit it well," Peterson said.

"It was close, but I couldn't get it done." On the next series Alabama finally did, with back-to-back Danny Woodson 1 1-yard completions, and then runs of 15 and 11 yards by Stacy setting up the touchdown. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and a personal foul call against Georgia led to an 18-yard Hamp Greene field goal on the next series. For much of the game, however, Alabama appeared to be. the team trying to give the game away. Nowhere was the Crimson Tide's futility more evident than on the first halfs final drive.

A 44-yard reverse by split end Kevin Lee should have given the Tide the ball on the Georgia 23. But a late clipping call moved it back to the 38, where Woodson was sacked for a 12-yard loss. Woodson was nearly sacked on the next play as well, but sneaked away from redshirt, freshman linebacker Maurice Harrell, rolled left and found Stacy for a 21 -yard gain. On first-and-10 from the Georgia 27, Alabama was penalized for illegal procedure, then after a Woodson incompletion, was whistled for illegal procedure again. Two plays later Matt Wethington missed a 42-yard field goal attempt to end the half.
