BUSINESS Wednesday, Oct 21. 1998 1)3 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Trade deficit hits record Buckhead named after a good sport t' financial crisis continued to depress demand in key markets for American producers. This year, America's deficit in goods and services trade is on track to set a record at $165 billion, far above the previous mark of $153 billion set in 1987. Economists predict even further deterioration in 1999 as Asian economies plunge deeper into recession and as Japan struggles to emerge from its worst downturn in 50 years. "We have got a lot of bad months ahead of us on trade," said Lawrence Chimerine, chief economist at the Economic Strategy Institute, a Washington think tank.

"It wouldn't take a lot to push us into a recession when you have a trade deficit growing this rapidly." ASSOCIATED PRESS America's trade deficit hit an all-time high of $16.8 billion in August as the global financial crisis pushed down exports of manufactured goods and farm products for a fifth straight month. Imports Surged, led by a flood of cars and auto parts from Mexico and Canada and toys from China. The deficit jumped 15.3 percent above a revised July imbalance of $14.5 billion, the Commerce Department said Tuesday. Much of the deterioration reflected a surge in automotive imports as foreign suppliers played catch-up after the settlement of the General Motors strikes. Exports fell to their lowest level in 19 months as the global tennis courts, a gymnasium, children's center, workout areas, aquatic center, aerobics areas, meeting rooms and family locker rooms.

It replaces the old Buckhead YMCA, which was sold for redevelopment. In addition to the $3.3 million raised in the community, the organization is borrowing about $4.5 million to build the project Metro Atlanta YMCA Chairman Lawrence Gellerstedt III, who is CEO of American Business Products, thanked the 600 Buckhead members who "hung in there, first with an old facility and then with no facility." And they won't have a place to go for at least a year. The new Buckhead is jokingly being called, "Y2K," because it is slated to open on Jan. 1, 2000. Sanders finds modern campaigns distasteful Sanders, 73, wistfully remembered the good old days of political campaigns.

"I sure am glad I'm not involved in a political campaign running for some office," he said. "I can't believe how different campaigns and television commercials are today compared to when I was running. "Certainly, we have got to get away from the idea that the only way you can win an election is to see how badly you can destroy your opponent, rather than seek- ing the support of the voter based upon issues the public is most concerned about. "It just precludes so many people in thinking about getting involved in the public It still is an honor to serve the public, but it's a tremendous sacrifice. Some way, somehow, it's'gpt to change." 1 Sanders also complimented the tenure of Gov.

Zell Miller. "He's been the finest governor iii my lifetime. He has earned all the accolades he's been given Good to be back home When Miller held a reception at the Governor's Mansion last week for friend, former legislaipr and author Matt Towery, oneof the guests was former Gov. Lester Maddox. Miller acknowledged Madd6x, still spry at 83, and the former governor said, without missing a beat, "It's good to be back home:" When Towery commented' on the number of Republicans and Democrats at the reception, Maddox yelled out, "I'm the only-one who beat both the Democrats and the Republicans." Champion of YMCAs: Donor gave $500,000 toward making it happen. i I Tuesday's ground- breaking of the new Buck-head YMCA, a fragrant aroma of statesmanship permeated the now smelly world of politics. It was a moment to honor one of Georgia's elder statesmen former Gov. Carl Sanders, a longtime champion of YMCAs. An anonymous donor had given $500,000 to have the $12 million YMCA named after Sanders, who served as the Democratic governor of Georgia from 1963 to 1967.

Surprisingly, the donor was none other than Guy Miilner, founder of Norrell who is the Republican nominee for governor this year running against Democrat Roy Barnes. But the lead gift was made two years ago, long before Miilner began his latest race for governor. "Guy's feelings toward the YMCA are similar to mine," Sanders said. "It goes way back." Sanders said it would be inaccurate to read any political implications in the Miilner gift. "Both Roy Barnes and Guy Miilner are friends of mine," he said.

MARIA SAPORTA "That's the reason you haven't seen my name on either side." The relationship between Sanders and Miilner also goes beyond politics. Sanders serves as a director on Norrell's board. "When I came to Atlanta, I first ran into Carl Sanders running the track at the Luckie Street Miilner said Tuesday. "I think Carl served our state and community well. He was a progressive governor and an outstanding citizen and contributor to Atlanta and Georgia.

It was very appropriate to have the named after him." The Metro Atlanta YMCA has been on an ambitious building campaign, raising $28 million in the past five years, according to Fred Bradley, the organization's president. But the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA will be the most significant project to date.
